Does lack of sleep affect milk production?

I'm having a bad output day here with the pump. It's almost 2pm and I've only got 9 ounces in the fridge. I just got back from pumping. I'll go again before leaving but I expect to be lucky to get 3-4oz. Normally I get 15oz and at that I'm already eating into freezer stash as she's been taking 6oz bottles instead of 5oz lately.

I'm wondering if it's because I got no sleep last night and am super exhausted or if my supply is just going down. I'm always so worried about my supply!  I have anxiety about my freezer stash going down!

I feel extra anxious today as even though she is sick she STILL is guzzling her 6oz bottles no problem. I was hoping hubby would say she has no appetite today, isn't that terrible!

Re: Does lack of sleep affect milk production?

  • Lack of sleep definitely affects my supply. The past two nights have been rough. Hoping tonight goes better for both of us!

  • I do think I've heard or read that---not sure where though.

  • Yes it does. I EP and I've read that even just pumping after a nap is good. Sleep releases hormones to up production...

try to get some sleep tonight and stay hydrated!

  • Sleep, calories, and hydration, those are the most important!

  • Hmm I may be less hydrated also perhaps, due to consuming coffee as my primary liquid today... Embarrassed

    Exactly what she said.

Also, stress doesn't help either especially when you're probably sitting there watching the milk drip into the bottles and looking every 2 seconds to see how much you've produced 5 minutes into your pump session!

You need to just let it go, relax, and use your pump sessions as a time to take a breather.  Worst case scenario you dip into your freezer stash (which most people don't have) or you have to give a bottle of formula every once in a while to give you some breathing room.

  • I just went and pumped again and got TWO OUNCES!! Wtf this has never happened to me. It's very sad.

This means that there is 7 ounces coming out of my freezer stash just for today.

Thank you all for the advice, hopefully she sleeps tonight and I get back on track tomorrow.

  • Lack of sleep definitely gets my supply. So does stress and even the smallest head cold. Is it possible that your AF is coming back? My supply cut in half overnight when she came back for me. Good luck and hang in there!

  • oh- also- stay away from mint- it tanks your supply- altoids, mint ice cream...and other herbs- I cook with sage, thyme and rosemary and sage is a big no-no, too. ANd, this summer, I had was eating mint choco chip ice cream for a week and wondering why my supply tanked...til I googled and found out about mint. Google regarding low milk supply, etc. You'll find all kinds of causes- in addition to the major ones of stress, lack of sleep and food.

  • Interesting about the mint! I don't really eat mint things unless I'm having mojitos.. yum mojitos.

I had a good nights sleep last night and today I am back on track! yippee!
