Ultrasound at every appointment?

Hello all!  I've had 3 appointments now (weeks 10, 11, &12) and one scheduled 2 weeks from now.  So far I've had an ultrasound done at each appointment and I believe I will have one every time I see him.  I'm not high risk, I'm only 24, and the doctor says everything looks great.  I love being able to see the baby so often, but from what I've been reading most people get one to confirm how far along they are and one at 20 weeks.  Has anyone else had this many ultrasounds so far?

  • Wow you're lucky! although why do you have so many appts? usually early on you only have like one a month.

I have no idea why I have so many.  I'm hoping after the next one at 14 weeks I will start only having to go once a month.

I actually had that many appointments too but I think for me it was because my m/s was really bad and I lost so much weight and I was already thin to begin with.

  • So far I've seen my OB twice, and both times (7w and 10w), had an u/s. She said it's because I was too early and we wouldn't have been able to get the hb on the doppler yet. I'm not complaining! Also had a dating u/s done last week at the hospital (more sensitive equipment). I won't have another u/s, though, til the end of november, either at 18 or 20 weeks for the anatomy scan.

  • I haven't heard of that many u/s, very exciting that you get to see LO that often.

I had a lot of appts right off the bat.

9/20 - met with OB Coordinator

    9/24 - Dating u/s

10/04 - Met with the Nurse and NP at my OB's office - heard the heart beat

10/8 - Had the NT Scan

10/18 - Meet with OB for the first time.

After this it will slow down (December I will have 2 because I will have the u/s to determine sex and also my regular OB appt.

  • Nope. I've only had 2 appointments also. My OB sees patients for the first time around 8-10 weeks and then every 4 weeks until sometime in the 3rd trimester. (Then it goes to every 2 weeks.) It's unusual to have so many appointments and to have an u/s at each one.

  • What i want to know is if your insurance is paying for all of these? Most insurance will only pay for 2. And going in every week seems excessive unless you are having problems.
My midwives see me once a month until 3rd tri when it's twice a month. Then somewhere around 35 weeks i go in once a week.
  • I'm going in every 2 - 3 weeks and most appointments have an u/s, but I'm having twins and they are trying to make sure everything stays good with them. They are monochorionic diamniotic, meaning one placena but they each have their own sac. They are doing lots of u/s now and probably will to make sure one isn't getting much bigger than the other, and that they don't end up developing TTTS. I agree, seeing the babies frequently is pretty cool, but the kicker for me is drinking all the water and not peeing for so long lol I do hope we do get to slow down the number of u/s soon. Best of luck to you!

I'm in the same boat as you.  I have to go every 2 weeks to the perinatologist for ultrasounds and every 3-4 weeks to my regular OB for check ups.  My twins are dichorionic/diamniotic meaning two seperate placenta's and sacs.  It's amazing getting to see them so often.

The ultrasound is in the examining room, and other than peeing in a cup, is 95% of what my appointment consists of.  I dont think he's charging for it because it's already there.  I hope I'm not wrong though!
