Please someone teach me how to wean my kid--

I have no idea what I am doing.

I thought "Oh, it will be easy once she starts to drink cow's milk. I'll just substitute that for a BF session."  Ummm, yeah, she just spits the cow's milk out.

Does it matter if I drop a BF session without her drinking the cow's milk. At this point, she is getting most of her nutrients from food, right? So whether or not she drinks the cow's milk doesn't really matter?

P.S. Ever since FFFC, when someone said everytime they see WCM they think of CM (cervical mucus), I can't stomach it. I'll have to type out "cow's milk" from now on.

  • I don't know if this helps or not but have you tried doing it slowly instead of giving her straight cows milk? When I switched Gator from BM to formula, she flipped out and refused it. At the time she was drinking 4oz, so I started with 3.5oz of BM with .5oz formula. After a few days I went to 3oz BM and 1oz formula. It was kind of a pain but she didn't notice the change. That is what I plan on doing with Gator for switching to cows milk.....I will slowly mix it into her formula. I see no reason to completely cut her off at exactly a year....if it takes her a bit to adjust, I am fine with taking it slow. She had a hard time digesting milk protein in my BM in the beginning so I don't want a repeat of spitting up and stomach cramps.

  • From what I understand they need the fats in milk at this age for healthy brain development. Whether it be breast milk, formula, or cows milk. My DS will take a few sips of cows milk, but that's it. I agree with Elsa to try mixing it. I gave DS 1 oz cows milk today mixed with 3 oz BM and it went over pretty well. I'm just going to keep doing that and adjusting the ratio until it's all cows milk. It will take me a few weeks longer than planned, but at this point that's really no big deal. Maybe try mixing it and see if E is more accepting of it.
  • Thanks! I will try to mix it.

I was hoping she'd be one of the easy babies who drank it without batting an eyelash, but I should have known better.
