Any recs for hotels in NYC?

Matt and I want to take the boys.  Maybe.  And I have no idea where to start even looking at hotels.

    Under 250 a night preferably...we would like to take the boys to see the tree at Rockefeller Plaza, and show them some of the Christmasy stuff. 

    H likes Hotel Pennsylvania -  any thoughts on that?

    I would stay away from hotel Pen. I had a conference there and the place was a bit gross. There are many nice places to stay-look at the Hilton ( this is on 52nd and 6th). You can also look at any place around time square. The tree and 5th ave are short train rides or walks away. Not sure how much actual travel you would like to do with the boys. If you stay closer to Rock center you have access to 5th ave, the tree and Central Park.

    DH and I stayed at the Blakely one Christmas and it was great since it was just a block or two away from Central Park and FAO Schwartz and a couple blocks the other direction from Rockefeller Plaza.

    Thanks everyone!  

     That was what I was kind of worried about with Hotel Pennsylvania, there were some REALLY bad reviews, and they had pics to go along with...kinda looked iffy.

    I will look into the options mentioned, thanks a lot!

    If bringing the boys, I would recommend sticking with a chain hotel (marriot, hyatt, etc). They are going to be more child friendly, especially compared to the 'botique' hotels in the city which can be hit or miss.
