I read the post below and realized I don't get the different pieces. What is a bumper. Why do you need one or not? You can use a quilt instead? I thought babies can't use blankets. Sorry.... I'm the first to admit I'm clueless.
Bumpers are the long pieces that tie to the sides of the crib, at the bottom. The general recommendation now is not use them, or use breathable if you feel you really need to use it to keep the baby from getting an arm or a leg caught. They're different from quilts or blankets, which don't tie to anything.

Well what does this mean? "Bumper pads are out of the question and I much prefer to use minky blankets then those comforters". What are minky blankets and comforters? You use them in a crib instead of...? What?
You can't use the comforter with a newborn, which is why a lot of people don't buy the matchy sets anymore. I think some people might hang quilts on the wall, or use them as a play blanket, or maybe wait to use them with a toddler. Babies are not supposed to have loose blankets in their beds. Bumper pads are not recommended because of SIDS risk as well.

A quilt is aka a comforter. Minky blankets are super soft and fairly thin blankets, but I still wouldn't use it in a crib. Baby could get tangled up in it & suffocate or be strangled. We did get a handful as gifts, they are luxuriously soft and we use them in the stroller or carseat when its cold. The handful of quilts we got as gifts (people love to gift blankets) we used on the floor during tummy time & playtime.
We just used plain white crib sheets (that I could bleach after diaper blow outs) and made a pretty crib skirt. HTH!

It's not recommended to use a bumper or a quilt, at least not in the crib. When we set up the nursery for DS1 6 years ago, we just picked out the individual pieces that we wanted and could safely use: crib sheet, window valance, wall hangings, mobile, lamp, and hamper. But now there are a few companies that make super cute sets that do not include the bumper or quilt. I'm preggo, and if we happen to have a girl, I definitely want to get one of the pink sets from Halo that also include a swaddle and sleepsack. So much more practical.
Not to be contrary, but we found a set that didn't have the bumper or diaper holder-thing, and instead had a wearable blanket and a changing pad cover. It was a bit more than I wanted to spend on bedding, but having a set was important to DH. (Choosing my battles, lol.)
I think the set makers are realizing what was said in the other thread and are making changes to their typical set to accommodate that.

Re: Crib bedding-- I don't get it.
Many people have cribs that convert to toddler beds, so they will use the comforter once LO gets older,

Right. You can't use the comforter or bumper. That's why a lot of people think the bedding sets are a waste of money (I agree).
All you need is a fitted sheet. If you want you can get a crib skirt (like a bed ruffle). Nothing else is needed.
Bumpers-things that go around the crib to "protect" the baby from hitting their head or getting arms/legs stuck through...these are suffocation risks
