Red blotchy ITCHY reaction to Lupron?

So I started Lupron last night. I thought the pinch of the skin was worse than the shot itself. And it was over so fast I couldn't believe it...

But....

About 5 minutes later I got a little itchy. I looked down and it still looked fine. So I went about my business, putting stuff away. And about 30 minutes later I looked down and my stomach was red and blotchy around the injection site (a big section of my stomach, not just a tiny spot by the shot). It took about 3 hours to go away.

I emailed my nurse about it (there were no hives which generally go along with my allergic reactions) and she said this isn't common but can happen. I'm supposed to "continue for now" and if it gets any worse I need to let her know.  Will they really STOP the Lupron?? What else could they put me on that would do the same thing? Anything?

Ugh!

  • Lupron is an agonist and they can switch you to an antagonist protocol (ganirelix or cetrotide) possible with BCP or the antagonist itself to suppress you during the prep cycle. For details see the advanced fertility website. Good luck and I hope you feel better.

  • Siggy warning  - and I hope you don't mind that I'm responding.

I had this same reaction the lupron.  However, it only happened if I injected to the left of my belly button.  Once I realized this, I just avoided that area and never had anymore problems.  Maybe try switching to another spot and see if that changes things.

    Good luck!

  • I've reacted like this to Lupron. Oddly enough, it didn't happen every time - maybe 1 or 2 shots out of each cycle (and I've used it on lots) I would get these quarter dollar-sized itchy welts. Beyond that anecdote, I'd listed to Edwina, obviously. :)
yeah, there she was ... like disco lemonade ...

I don't mind at all, you were around a lot when I was a lurker and I recognized your name! CONGRATS to you! And thanks for the advice :) I'm glad I'm not alone with this irritating reaction! I planned on switching to the left side tonight (it was right side last night) so we'll see how that goes :)

Thanks Rex! I told my nurse that I should have known this would happen to me. My body likes to protest EVERYTHING.  And also, welcome to the boards :)
