I thought I would share my birth story since I was so nervous about my induction and found relief in positive outcomes. I am sorry if this gets long.
I was being induced at 39 weeks due to chronic hypertension. I had it under control for most of the pregnancy, but my doctor thought it would be smart to go forward with the induction since that is the general recommendation with hbp. I was going into it only a fingertip dilated so I was very worried about a 30 hour labor or a possible c section.
I checked into the hospital late Wednesday night to start Cervidil. I was so unbelievably nervous when I got there. My blood pressure was through the roof and my pulse was at 133. I was shaking uncontrollably while they prepped me for the IV and checked my vitals. After all of this, they inserted the Cervidi, which for me, was quite painful. I have heard mixed reviews on this, but my experience was not good. I was expecting to have some contractions through the night similar to braxton hicks, but as the night went on, the contractions were keeping me awake and became pretty painful. I finally understood the difference between real contractions and braxton hicks at this point. They took the Cervidil out at 6 AM and checked me. I was between 1 and 2 centimeters dilated and pretty thinned out at that point. They were then going to start the Pitocin. My contractions were so bad that I was worried about the Pitocin contractions without an epidural. I also didn't want to get the epidural too early because I had no idea what I was in for in terms of labor. I decided to go ahead and get it anyway and I am sooooo thankful. The epidural for me was fantastic. It worked completely and I didn't think it was painful to get. It was scary knowing what was going on, but totally worth it. They then started the pitocin and I was expecting a really long day and possibly night.
At around 1PM, I was laying in bed and felt a very strange pop, which I knew wasn't a kick. I reached down and realized my water had broke. At around 2PM, I was checked and at 4cm. I was pretty happy with this as it was showing some progress. At around 4PM I started feeling a ton of pressure (no pain though) almost like I wanted to push. The nurse kept saying it was normal to feel this way. My doctor came in around 4:30 and I told him about the pressure. He decided to check me again. I apparently went from 4 to 10 centimeters in two hours. He said I was about ready. I couldn't believe it! They had me labor down for about an hour and half since she was still a bit high to begin pushing. Of course, at this point, my epidural ran out so I had to make a decision. I either was going to push through the pain or get another "dose" of it to make it through the rest of the labor. I decided to get it. I am not sure if I made the right decision. I think pushing would have been way "easier" without it in that I would know better how to push, but I am not sure I could have tolerated the pain. By 5:30 I was ready to start pushing. This was the hardest part for me of the entire day. Like I said, the epidural made it really hard to figure out how to push. It took me a while. The nurse said I kept pushing in my face instead of bearing down. My husband and the nurse were awesome thought. I could not have done it without them. The doctor came in around 6 and this is when it got really tough. I just felt like I had no energy left and I hadn't even been pushing for that long. They had to give me oxygen at one point, which helped. Things got a bit scary at the end because the cord was wrapped tightly around her neck. My doctor could not loop it around so he had to cut it before she came out completely. I wasn't really aware this was happening. I just knew he was giving me very clear and direct instructions on when to push and when not to. When he got her head and one shoulder out, he cut the cord and then I had to push like crazy so she came out completely. It was pretty scary. I ended up with an episiotomy, but didn't tear.
Thankfully, Vivian Rose was born happy and healhy on October 4th at 6:34 PM. She was 7 pounds 11 ounces and 22 1/2 inches long! Needless to say, none of her newborn stuff fits because of her length. She is absolutely precious and we love her so much. I am struggling with breastfeeding so at every feeding I have to try to breastfeed, pump to get my supply up, and formula feed her to supplement. It is a long process, but I'm hoping she will take to it eventually.
Sorry that this is so long, but here is one of her first pics in the hospital.

Congrats and thanks for the story. Your baby is beautiful!
I am going to be induced tomorrow and it is freaking me out a little. All weekend I have been wishing this little one out. I hope mine goes as well as yours.
Don't give up on the breastfeeding, it's a process for you and her. You will get the hang of it, just don't give up. ;
