How closely do you monitor your kids food intake?

I'm wondering if I am over controlling about this. My kids are not allowed to have any free access at all to the food in the house. They have to ask for any snack they have no matter how small. I could name, on any given day, exactly what either one of them have eaten...even snack at school.

  • Not as closely as I did 6 months ago. He's getting fussy, and I pick my battles. I would never be able to tell you everything he eats in a day.

  • If that makes you feel better, then you should continue it even if it is controlling. In our house, Caleb usually will get something out and ask if he can have it. I hardly ever tell him no. At school, I have no clue what he eats, other than what the menu for the month tells me, but I usually do not look at it.
  • i always know what she's eaten in a day - but not because i'm keeping a log or trying to keep track or anything.  i just happen to supply all the food to the day care and she also has to ask for food at home - and we eat dinner together, etc.  and i know how much because i get back from day care what she didn't eat and again - i see it at home.

so i don't "monitor" anything - i just know.  if that makes sense....

  • I don't log it either. I know because they are home with me the majority of the time and I provide the food and make the dinner..and Natalie eats the lunch I send to school with her and Owen has a snack schedule at school.
  • DS has to ask for food but I don't really pay attention beyond that.

  • I don't know what DS eats everyday either.  I feed him breakfast every morning before school, but his daycare provides lunches and snacks.  I know that they get a serving of fruit and a serving of veggies at lunch, but I don't know if he ate it all.

  • I don't think it's controlling to know what your kids eat when they are so young - you still have to do all the food prep, and you know if you left a box of crackers out they'd probably eat the whole thing right then and there (at least mine would).  So yes, I do know everything my son eats, because I provide it all - he takes snack and lunch to preschool and they send home what isn't eaten.
