How big is the baby now?

Leave it to my grama to make a comment about how big I have gotten this time.  So this morning when I drop my daughter off at my mom and dad's house before I go to work, my grandmother is there to see the great grandkids.  I can see her staring at my stomach and I said "what?"  She then proceeded to ask me how big the baby was right now, when I told her, she then said..."hmmm, amazing you  look that big and the baby is still so small."  I could not believe she said that!  I have only gained 5 lbs so far, yes my stomach is bigger than it was with DD, but I have not gained that much weight and I am small.  I had an eating disorder through high school and college so her comments really don't help things. I really just need to let it roll off my shoulders and not bug me but for some reason this morining it struck the wrong chord. Have a grea Friday!

Re: How big is the baby now?

  • I keep thinking I look too big for a baby that small.  But DH keeps reassuring me, since I haven't put on wieght anywhere other than my belly and boobs, that i'm still doing good.  i.e. not letting myself go.

  • Keep in mind that, while the baby is still pretty small, your actual uterus is significantly bigger to allow for amniotic fluid, etc. In addition, your other organs are also shifting upward to accommodate the growing uterus. So even if the baby is itty bitty, there's still a bunch of other factors taking up room. I hate how pregnant = people feeling like they can say whatever they want about your weight. The only comment that should ever come out is "Wow, you look amazing!" :

  • Ugh- I am so sorry she said that.  Maybe next time, you could point out that your growth also reflects the growth and size of your uterus- which is obviously bigger than the baby! Plus, STM's show earlier and are bigger earlier on, just because their body has been through this before.

I am sure you look beautiful!

  • I can relate to your struggles with food; my first pregnancy was really difficult trying to accept my changing body. One time, when I was into the 3rd trimester (don't remember exactly when) I went somewhere with my mom and sister (who was a month ahead of me) and my mom saw me and started singing "fatty fatty two by four". I about lost it right there on the sidewalk. She didn't mean it negatively, but holy cow... I have since had a discussion with her about being sensitive and she responds much more appropriately this time around.

  • I have struggled with my weight my entire life, and after losing 85 lbs about 8 years ago, I totally get that it is hard to accept the weight gain/shape change as you are growing a baby.  I am pregnant with my 2nd also, and yeah, things happen quicker for sure.  I was barely showing at this point in my first pregnancy.  I have only gained 3 lbs with this pregnancy but it looks like 10.  Some people (esp people who have not struggled with disordered eating or weight problems) don't realize that saying something like that can really hurt someone's feelings or cause you to have those negative thoughts that you did when you were struggling.  I am sure you look great, and remember it is for a good cause.  My husband keeps reminding me "This is the last time you have to be pregnant!" cause after this one we are done!
