Traditional Italian Boys Name

My DH is full blooded Italian and we are thinking of going with a traditional name. So far we like

Nico or Nicholi

Gianni

Dante

Leonardo

What are your opinions?

Re: Traditional Italian Boys Name

  • Nico is cute. Not really into the others. My husband is 100% Italian and his name is Riccardo. If we have a boy, he will be a little Ricky.

  • Dominic, Joseph, Salvatore, Angelo, Marco, Luca, Enzo--some names from my Italian family/friends.

I've met 2 Nicos lately....has to have the right last name or it looks odd (ex. one of the Nicos--he just turned 1--has an Irish last name

In my area Gianni is heavily used in the Latino population

Of them all, I like Dante

  • I am Italian and have many relatives and friends with these names (so I comment with love!).

I think Nico and Dante are a little too much. Jersey Shore-ish, if you will. You know that scene from My Big Fat Greek Wedding where they introduce the cousins as Nick, Nick, Nick, Nikki, and Nick? It's so true.

I like Gianni, but worry that it will be mispronounced (like Gianna often is).

Of the options, I like Leonardo, mostly because Leo is awesome.

My favorite name not listed here is Carlo.

  • I like Dante. My ultimate favorite Italian boy name is Giuseppe.

  • The only one I like is Dante but not the meaning of it. What about Domiano?
  • I'm surprised but I think Dante is my favorite. Leonardo is also nice. I don't like Nico, I think there's a character in Grand Theft Auto 4 named Nico. Gianni makes me think of Jersey Shore.

  • Like a PP said I prefer Giovanni over Gianni. I also like Leonardo, especially for the nn Leo. I like Nico. I don't like all the associations that jump to mind with Dante.

  • My friend's sons are

    Ramo (Ray-mo)

    Nico

    Giovanni

    Antonio

  • Thank you all, I agree that Jersey Shore comes to mind with Gianni. But for some reason I keep coming back to it. DH and I also really like Dominic and I may even be able to get away with Nico as a nn.
  • I like Nico but have three friends that within the past year have named their sons that so I think it is becomming pretty popular. Although one is Greek and spells it with a k...Niko. I also love Giovanni and call him Gio for short.

We are both Italian and are having triplets and are trying to go with all "M" names that are Italian. So far we have only decided on Matteo. We are thinking Marco or maybe Mario.

  • My son is Nico was born in Rome, so has no NJ shore thing going on for me. Nicholi is not Italian. Nicolo or Nicola would be the italian spelling.

My oldest sons middle name is Gianni so i love that as well!

    Others that i love are

    Stefano

    Mateo

    Domenico

    Luca

    gianluca

    Franco

    marco

The only one on your list im not a fan of is dante

  • I love Matteo. I think it's enough of a nod to Italian, but also easy enough for the whole world to recognise, spell, pronounce.
