1st Trimester

Gaining weight too quickly and I can't STOP EATING!!

Try not to judge me.... but this is REALLY becoming a problem. I wasn't skinny to start with (a size 8-10 normally, pre-pregnancy), and now I can't stop eating. I know, I know, I should have more self control... but I'm STARVING all the time!

I have been trying really hard to eat healthy snacks. I eat a lot of fruit and light string cheese, but it's never enough. Especially right after I get home from work (I'm a teacher,) I find myself snacking up until dinnertime. I am also constantly craving carbs. For awhile I was doing a really good job of exercising, but I'm so tired and have only been doing it a few times a week. I have good intentions of going to the gym after work, but I come home and somehow lose the energy and motivation as soon as I walk through the door.

I know it sounds like excuses, and I should have more self control, but I'm reallllly struggling here. I'm 13 weeks and have already gained 6 lbs.... and I know it's fat, not baby! I REALLY need to slow it down, I don't want to be huge. Any tips or advice?

Amanda

Re: Gaining weight too quickly and I can't STOP EATING!!

  • I know how you feel about gaining weight, I feel hungry all the time myself but I've just been eating a lot of nuts and fruit to try and keep myself from exploding. I actually learned I lost weight at my appointment today and they would rather see you gain a little then lose or so I've been told. A nurse told me that gaining 5 to 7 lbs first trimester is pretty normal, so don't freak out to much :)

  • 6 pounds sounds normal for the first semester. I was the same way hungry all the time and my exercise routine tapered off due to fatigue.

Recently my appetite has tapered off I just hit 13 weeks today and I assumed my previous hunger was my body telling me it needed the food.
  • try not to stress. 6 lbs is normal in 1st trimester.

  • I am in the same boat : ( I too am a teacher, and come home extremely tired.  When I get to work Im always so focuse on the job that I got in a bad habit of workin through lunches and forgettng to pee..lol

When I found out I was pregnant I knew these bad habits needed to change.  I started keeping snacks next to my computer and make sure to "graze" on healthy food throughout the day.  When I get home I do eat a nice size meal with my DH.  Im also usually a size  8-10, but whatever Im doing with eating isnt workingv either.

I actually was convinced with my new routin that I would lose a couple pounds.....but instead im gaining.

Im not goin to stress too much right now.  I found goin out and buying some new clothes ( that fit better) made a world of difference in my attitude.  I keep telling myself...Im pregnant and bloated....lol

  • As a teacher and another Amanda, I am right there with you!  I have to snack all morning to keep from being sick but everything is healthy yet I am gaining weight.  This happened with my first but I feel like it is piling on sooner this time.
  • I feel your pain! I, too, am a teacher...keeping carrots and celery by my computer helps. However, when I eat lunch or dinner, I want something substantial.

I'm only about 7 weeks and have gained about 4-5 lbs. I think, as someone said earlier, it will help to buy some larger sized clothes. Stretchy pants rule.

I just try to not think about weight right now. I know, easier said than done.

  • Good Luck with all ladies... I'm having the opposite problem, starving but nothing is satisfying and when I eat and it is not appealing!  Feeling frustrated in just a bit of a different way!

     Hope all goes well!

  • Speaking from experience with my first pregnancy, the hunger waves will come and go. You may just gain more in the first trimester and less than most people in the 2nd. I gained about 45 pounds last time (going to be more careful this time) and the biggest segment of that happened between weeks 18-26 because I was constantly starving.

  • Don't focus on the weight, just focus on being healthy. Your doctor will tell you if you need to change things up. A bunch of pre-cut veggies with some hummas is a quick way to grab food without feeling like you noshed on something not so great for your body.

  • Awww big hugs, we have so much to think about while being pregnant, it can feel overwhelming. Food is just one of the many topics that I also stress about. I don't have a solution but maybe try to cut up some veggies and make it a goal to eat those first, then snack on whatever. Good luck!

  • I'm with you! All I want is carbs and not even the good kind and I am hungry all the time.  Advice on working out: Pack a gym bag and take it to work with you. Go straight from work to the gym or park.  Commit to at least two days during the week and one day on the weekend. I realized that if I go home after work the last thing I want to do is turn around and leave again.  I don't skip as much as I use to doing this.  Don't stress so much about the weight unless your doctor tells you its a problem!

  • Agreed. My friend gained 1/2 her weight in the first trimester, none in the second, and the other 1/2 in the third.

Plus 6lbs isn't bad. I would be jumping up and down if i only gain 6 by the time I start my 2nd... then again, I had no clue how much I weighed pre-pregnancy. Was never one for scales.
