Baby Names

Is this name ridiculous?

So, I'm not even sure how much I like this name, but I keep thinking about it. I saw the name Bellamy for a girl in an article for the Novokratz family (sp? the family on HGTV). I usually strongly dislike trendy names, names that are even somewhat masculine and surnames. Well, to me, this name just may be all three. I think the only reason I may like it is because of the possible "Belle" nickname. I know this trend is overdone, but ever since I was a little girl, i LOVED the name "belle", just plain belle. Sadly, it does not work with our last name at all. The last syllable of our last name is pronounced "belle". We turned down Belle and Annabelle for DD1 because of this. It makes me very sad. I've always wanted a little Belle! Now, I have been a little turned off since Belle names have become so popular, but I am a little intrigued by this option. Bellamy wouldn't sound so redundant with our last name because it is at the beginning of the name and not the end. I also like the french connection to the name. What do you guys think? Is it bad? Is my judgment being clouded because of my love of this nickname? Should I just give it up? Or is it a decent option? TIA!

  • I feel you. I love the name Annabel. It just sounds so off with our LN.

I also like Bellamy but for a boy. From what I can tell it's meaning basically means handsome friend.  I can also see it on a girl too...and that is rare for me to say.

"belle amie" or "bell ami" means beautiful friend or dear friend in french. So, it could go either way.

I have tried to get Belle/Annabelle to work with our LN in any way, shape or form. I've tried to justify it somehow. It's clearly not working and I can't let it go!

  • I really don't like it for a boy or girl, but I would come closer to liking it for a boy.  So if you call her Belle and the last syllable of your last name is -belle, that still seems odd to me.  Like she would be Belle ____belle?  If it were me, I would have to come to terms with not having a Belle because of our last name.  Sorry!

  • Yeah, this name falls into the 'ridiculous' category for me. The only way I wouldn't side-eye it was if it's your maiden name, and even then I think it would only work on a boy.

I taught a Belen once. I believe it's a Spanish name- her mom was Cuban. Might that work?

  • I actually really like it, but I also love the Novogratz's. The name was on this list I saw last week of unusual names that are destined to be trendy:

  • I really do not like Bellamy for a first name. If you are ok with "Belle" in the first part of the first name why not try a compound first name like Bella-Marie, or Belle-Marie.

    Or try Belinda, Bellatrix, Bellina?

  • Yes, it's a ridiculous name. I wouldn't use the Novogratz for child naming inspiration.Their kids' names are  Wolfgang, Tallulah, Bellamy, Breaker, Five, Holleder, and Major. I side eye every name except Wolfgang and Tallulah.

    Same here.

  • Bellamy reminds me of Salami. It's an absurd FN or MN for any child, regardless of the gender.

Sorry, I think it is hard to explain without being able to hear the name. I felt if I went with Annabelle ____-belle (its not spelled belle but said that way), then it's the same end to her first and last name. If it's at the beginning of her name, I thought it may not be as noticeable. When I say it out loud, it doesn't sound as bad. Like I said, not sure I'm convinced anyway, but to me it seemed like an option, because I'm so sad Annabelle/Belle is not at all!

I doubt that clears anything up, you'd have to hear it basically.

OP, what about Bethany? It doesn't give you Belle, but it's actually a real first name for a girl.

  • I think it's a beautiful name but I would spell it Bellamie. I don't really like names that end in "y" but it is just a pet peeve of mine ha ha. But she would probably have more nicknames than just Belle because the last part could give her Amie too. Either way, I really like it!

Can I ask what her middle name would be? Just so I can hear the cuteness of the whole name (:

  • Maybe it's because I have kids in athletics, but I think nn can come from last names. All three of my kids have last name nn that came from teammates calling them by last name. Even my daughter. They are no longer called by their last name, it morphed into something that suited them.

If your last name has "belle" as a sound in it, call her belle.

Don't try to force it with a name you don't love just to get the nn. She's already set up for it. Choose a name that speaks to you and has meaning.
