What do you define as CIO vs. fussing?

I will sometimes allow my DS to fuss, letting him make a few sounds. However the moment he starts to cry, I always pick him up right away.  I do not think what I am doing is CIO.  However, I wanted to see what everyone else's definitions were of CIO.  Do you pick your DC up the moment they make a sound or wait until they start crying?

  • of course I let him fuss a little.  If I didn't he wouldn't get any sleep, he oten fusses a minute or two and goes back to sleep.  CIO is letting them all out wail, an escalating, unhappy cry.  I had to stop myself from going to him too quickly- guess what I found out- he wanted to sleep thru one of his feedings but I was getting him up the moment he fussed- went from sleeping 5 hours to 7 hours when I let him.

  • I don't know if there is an actual length of time where the baby is crying to be considered CIO, but I would say anything over 3-5 min or something.  I let DD fuss too and sometimes cry for a little bit and she usually is either crying in her sleep anyway because she STTN, but if I got up as soon as she started to cry I wouldn't know if it was sleep crying or not and then I might be disturbing her sleep ya know?
