Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

My great eater suddenly super picky (15 mo)

DS is 15 mo and up until recently would eat just about anything, would ask for 2nd and 3rds on broccoli even (by signing more).  I went on a work trip a couple of weeks ago and DH said he didn't eat real well while I was gone and I thought maybe it was b/c I was gone, but he's remained pretty picky.  If I remember correctly DD had a similar phase around this age so I'm hoping that's what it is.  When she was about this age I started making her fruit and yogurt smoothies every am with pureed carrots added in so she at least got 1 serving of veggies every day and continued offering her a balanced diet and a few months later she started eating better again. So maybe I'll do that for him too.  Anyone else's LO going through a similar phase?

  • Mine! DS is 21 months and has really started to change his eating habits. He used to be such a good eater but now he just doesn't act hungry. He will eat fruit like crazy but picks and chooses with meat and veggies. It seems to depend on the day now,

  • My DS started this at about 11 months.  My pedi said that this usually happens around 15 moths, so you are right about it being a phase.  I am still struggling with it 3 months later and hope it gets better soon.  Good luck!

  • Yes, right around the same time, mine did that too. He would eat anything we gave him. Now he eats the same things everyday. Hopefully it's just a phase. A long phase, yes, but hopefully they grow out if it.

  • Yeah, we're suddenly having trouble with veggies.  My pedi said to be prepared for this and that's it's a very normal phase.  She said that, often, total food intake slows down around 12 months and not to worry if DD seems to be eating less.  And picky eating following that is very normal.  Best bet is to continue to offer healthy options, along with things your LO likes to eat, at every single meal.  Eventually they will come back around and start eating a wider variety of foods again.
