What do they drink? I'm waiting on the pedi to call back but ds2 has had bad stomach aches since we finished the milk transition this week. He did have problems when I bf after eating too much dairy. Advice is welcome.

Re: If you have a kid that can't tolerate cows milk....
My kids have a ton of yogurt and cheese. No milk.
ETA: I realize your question was more about tummy aches not about not "liking" milk.
lactose free milk. He HATED coconut milk, would only drink maybe 4-5 oz/day after a week of it. He refused almond milk, literally. And he's allergic to soy milk.
We tried lactose free milk by accident, he drank it and he could poop again.
DD2 had a milk allergy (also allergic to tree nuts/peanuts/eggs). We started her on vanilla soy milk at 13 months old.
She's 2y 8 months now and has outgrown her milk allergy. She refuses, however, to drink WCM now, as she prefers the taste of vanilla soy. She will drink chocolate cow's milk, but I refuse for her to drink that exclusively. Hopefully we can get her WCM like the rest of us.
DS can't have any dairy. I'm still breastfeeding and hope to continue that until he is 2. If he still hasn't outgrown his issues then we will most likely go to almond milk as that is what I drink.
ETA: If we had a girl I'd probably go with soy milk, but I'm not completely comfortable with the possible soy-estrogen link for a boy.

Ditto. This is why my son drinks a mixture of non-dairy milks. Soy has a lot more protein than the rice (I actually haven't paid attention to the almond...) but I know not everyone can handle the soy milk either.

We had to cut all dairy and soy out of my diet when DD2 was nursing, so we looked into the options for after she weaned in case she didn't do well. Luckily she did. Finding a dairy substitute actually is difficult because many of the "milks" sold don't have the nutrients you're looking for in cow's milk (specific balance of protein and fat). Goat's milk is the closest (and if your son did okay on formula or nursing without you changing your diet that's gentler and may work). After that soy is good, then hemp. Rice and almond milk are tasty but have little to no protein and are usually low or no fat, so while they're a nice drink they lack the nutrition you're looking for in milk.
You can also make up the dairy needs through yogurt and cheese if he likes those then have him drink water to stay hydrated.
Both mine drink plain unsweetened almond milk. DD1 very minimally in cereal only and DD2 will drink a cup or two a day. They both eat yogurt and that is how they get their fat/protein.

Goat milk. You can get it powdered relatively inexpensively on amazon if it's difficult to find in your area. Now that my ds is almost two, I feel better abt slowly switching over to unsweetened soy. But I think that when babies are young, it's more important to get the more complete nutrition you find in goat milk.
