REALLY dumb question: Mama vs Momma

Okay, like I said this is a really dumb question. In my 28 years of living, it was not until sometime this year when I caught on to people using the term "momma". Brillant, I know. I always thought there was just Mama.

Anyways - my question being... What is the difference, is there one?

 K, thanks!

    It's Mama.

ETA:  There is a difference in definition if you look them up, but they both reference mother.

Mama- You are one HOT mama!

    Momma- I love you, Momma.

That's how I was raised, anyway.

I always thought it was just a cultural thing and that both meant the same. But then again, "momma" is fairly new to me, too.

I would never use, or take seriously, momma.  It looks completely made up to me, even if it isn't.  It's mama only and all the way.

I think it's time I venture out from the rock I was living under because I had no idea people spelled it differently. P.s. My mother hated being referred to as mama. It was either mom or mommy. When we got older it was "Ma!!" she didn't like that either.

To me, Momma is a slang spelling.  Mama is correct IMO.   I think cultural/geographic differences would be for "mom" and "mum".

It's Mama or Mommy here, not "Momma".

I only knew momma until about 2 years ago. To me, if mommy is spelled mommy then momma would be spelled the same except with an "a." That was always my thinking anyways. I use then interchangeably now.

I think it's pretty interchangeable and probably just a geographic thing like pop vs soda vs coke.
