Starting cereals based on weight. Has anyone heard of this?

A friend of mine has a June baby, and she started him on rice cereal when he turned 3 months old.  Her pedi recommends starting when a baby reaches 4 months old or 14 lbs (whichever comes first).  My friend's baby was almost 14 lbs at 2 months, but was advised to wait until he was 3 months old since he hit the weight requirement pretty early.  I know different pedis have different philosophies when it comes to starting solids, but I've never heard of a weight based system before.  Has anyone else run into this?  I must admit that I find it a little odd.

  • I've never heard that and wouldn't do it. Their weight has nothing to do with the maturity of their digestive system.  My LO was born over 9 pounds and hit 14 pounds before 3 months as well.  We still waited until he was around 6 months to do any kind of solids.

  • E was 11lbs at birth, and was 14lbs by 2 months.  We were never told by pedi to start rice cereal, in fact she was fine with us avoiding it completely, even when we introduced solids.  I just saw a study about arsenic in rice cereal, but I didn't pay too much attention because we don't use it.  I would urge your friend to check it out and question their pedi.  I'm pretty sure the study recommended limiting rice cereal intake to once a week.

  • What is the hurry??? This why I don't always follow pedi's advice.  Sometimes its just plain dumb.
