Bottle Warmer/Milk not warmed up

I had always assumed that you had to warm up breastmilk from the fridge. However, I have been reading online that some babies take milk straight from the fridge and that is okay. I'm going to breastfeed, but pump as well. Does anyone have experience with this?

I have a bottle warmer on my registry and now I am thinking of deleting it if it is not necessary. Thoughts?

  • I"ve heard you don't need it and some friends swear by that. However, we used one for heating up bm and formula when I was finished with bf'ing. I didn't think it was a hassle nor did I regret it. I was kind of like, "if i woke up in the middle of the night warm milk would be nice over cold milk".

  • Some baby tummys can't handle cold liquids, some can. There's no way to know until your baby is here. I did not have a bottle warmer, I let the milk get to room temp before feeding.

  • DS liked BM room temp so I would use bottle warmer to warm it from the fridge, as he got a little older he didn't mind it cold anymore, but it took a while!

  • We don't plan to use a bottle warmer. I've always heard one of the worst things you can do is get a baby used to have a really warm bottle because then they are less likely to want a room temp or cool bottle.
  • It all depends on the child and as they get older, they are more apt to take milk cold.  I never really kept milk in the fridge, but would freeze it.  I would just run the bag under warm water for like 5 minutes and it would be a good temp to give to DS.  Keep it on the registry if you want it, but I don't consider it a necessity.

  • I think it depends on the baby.  DD liked her milk HOT.  I mean really hot, she refused to drink cold milk for the longest time.  And to this day she still prefers it warmer.

  • i would just run the bottle under warm water from the sink...took less than a min to bring it to room temp! this is my 3rd, and we've never owned a bottle warmer. .

  • I never heated up breast milk or formula. DS had no problem nursing then drinking from a cold bottle when he needed more.

  • I plan on trying to feed the baby straight from the fridge. A friend of mine does it and its nbd to her LO. Some might be pickier though. If you BF a lot and only occasionally pump and bottle feed, the baby may be less likely to want it at the cold temperature. But if you will pump a lot, baby will probably get used to it but it might take a while. Depends on how often you BF directly from the breast at "body temp" I think.
  • I have never warmed a bottle in my life. He had it straight for the bottle (I FF) and he had it prepared & cold from the fridge. I never felt it was necessary & I'm sure I save myself a ton of trouble.

  • I think bottle warmers, like wipes warmers, are a complete waste.

I used to put the bottle in a bowl of hot water to warm it up, and that was perfectly sufficient.

  • You can also take bottles out ahead of time to warm to room temp. Breast milk can sit out for 8 hours. When I needed to heat a bottle I put it in a cup of hot water for a few minutes. Worked great. Trust me, all of that baby stuff starts to add up spacewise, especially once you try up store it. I'd suggest waiting. You can always get it later if you feel like the hot water trick doesn't work.

This is my plan too, but we'll see how it goes! If baby doesn't like the cold milk we'll have to invest in a warmer.

  • Really the only reason I would warm breast milk is to make sure all the fat is mixed into it, and not stuck on the sides, but it doesn't have to be that warm. The other is to make sure babies body temp. is maintained, it's harder for them to create body heat, and warming milk helps with that, but like PPs have said, you can heat up water and warm it that way and it works just as well without a bottle warmer!

  • I think bottle warmers are overrated.  I have worked in many infant classrooms and this is my preferred method:

    1.  take glass measuring cup and fill with water

    2.  put in microwave for about 1 1/2 minutes

    3.  put bottle in measuring cup
