XP: What is your vehicle?

I posted this on my BMB earlier this week. I am going to have to find a new vehicle because right now I own a chevy cobalt and that is just not enough space for a new baby. So what do you drive? Would you buy and minivan for baby # 1 or wait? Car shopping is a difficult decision!!

Re: XP: What is your vehicle?

  • I refuse to drive a minivan because it just isn't my style, even if it's super convenient. I bought a toyota highlander right before DD was born, and then upgraded to a newer year limited model highlander after DS was born. We can fit 3 across in our second row, have a ton of trunk space or the option to have a third row. I love my car and don't want to ever drive anything else. We had considered a Yukon or something with 3 kids, but we drive a lot and I didn't feel comfortable in something so big and such a gas guzzler.

  • We have 3 boys and 2 will be in carseats and 1 in a booster - I drive a Ford Edge. It will be cramped but it works. DH has an F-150 with plenty of room for all boys.

I'm doing everything possible NOT to purchase a minivan - If my Edge does not work out we will purchase a new 2013 Ford Explorer that has 3rd row seating and plenty of room!

  • I have a Honda Civic and a Toyota 4 Runner. The Civic is much too small so I never use it anymore. I only use the 4 Runner. Plus I feel safer in it since its a larger vehicle.

  • I have a Ford Explorer and LOVE it! The 3rd row is great when you need more seating and it folds down so I can put the stroller or wagon in there.

  • When DD was born, I was driving a VW Passat. It worked fine with just the 1. However, when it died on me, I bought a MAzda CX-9. I like being higher up (I do all of my commuting on the interstate), like the 3rd row option or the tons of room in the back, and it was voted one of the crossovers with the highest resale value.

  • We actually almost bought a Cobalt last fall, but decided not to, not because of the size, but because the spaces you'd put a baby in do poorly in crash ratings.  The Chevy Cruze is way safer in the backseat, and I think it's roomier as well, and that's what we went with.  We love love love it, and the gas mileage is so much better than if we'd gotten something huge.  I highly recommend it.

  • I was driving a 1998 Lexus ES300 before. It would have been fine with one person or even two in the back but I have 2SS's who are in elementary and middle school so there wasn't enough space for them and the car seat. I upgraded to a 2012 Kia Sorento. It is very roomy and has the optional 3rd row seat that folds all the way into the car. I refused to buy a minivan as it is just NOT my style in the slightest. Though I suppose if we have one more baby after this one I might convince DH to buy one for himself. Right now he is driving a 2009 Jetta and it will not fit all of us comfortably...

  • I have a Chevy Silverado right now, but am looking to buy a new car when I get it paid off (which should be soon).  I commute an hour to work one way and am looking for something that is more economical on gas as well as child friendly.

  • We have a new Honda CRV and it will be plenty of room for DS in a booster in the new LO. Plus it's still amazing on gas! I refuse to get anything that sucks on gas unless I absolutely have to, and that includes minivans. We had one before and it was horrible!

  • DH will be getting a new midsize truck before the baby gets here but I drive a Nissan Versa. Down graded from a Chevy Trailblazer. I absolutely love this car!!!! Gas mileage is amazing, backseat has more room than most economy cars, and the trunk is huge. (we have the sedan, not the hatchback)

I'm not a minivan kinda girl, so if we did have to upsize again it will probably be a Ford Edge.

  • I drove a Honda Civic prior to getting pregnant -- and probably would have kept that car if we were expecting only one (and trade up later once we were expecting #2)

That said, given we're expecting two, we traded up early -- opted for the Honda Pilot. Minivans are not my thing, and with the Pilot, I can fit three carseats across the middle seat (I didn't want to have to upgrade AGAIN when/if we have a third), and there's a 4th LATCH system in the 3rd row if needed.

Thus far, I've been quite happy with the Pilot -- and I imagine once the babies arrive, I'll REALLY appreciate all that extra room!

  • I drove a Nissan Altima with baby #1 (husband had a Scion TC).  When #2 came along, we got a Kia Sorento. Now that we are expecting #3, we are looking at either a GMA Acadia or a Buick Enclave.  I'm anti-minivan. Husband now drives a Mustang, so the bigger car is our family car and needs to be comfortable and roomy for all.

I honestly don't think you need a bigger car with just one kid, especially not a minivan.

  • I think it's funny that everyone refuses to buy a minivan. I'm pregnant with #3 and am just embracing that I'm a mom of young kids who will drive a minivan. We have to buy a different car than the one we have to fit 3 carseats and minivans are TONS more convenient (when none of the kids can buckle themselves), cheaper than an SUV (when you go with a used one) and get slightly better gas mileage. It's a no brainer for me...all those options outweigh my vanity. :) However, I wouldn't get a minivan unless i HAD to. If it's your first kid, just get a bigger car! No need for a big van until the time comes!

  • We have a Nissan Rogue and  a Buick Rendezvous.  I LOVE the Rendezvous, but my husband drives it now because he feels like the Rogue has more safety features and it is AWD and that I should drive the "safer" car.  When the Rogue is paid off we will most likely upgrade to a Buick Enclave because of it's second row having captains seats instead of a bench.  I really like the layout and feautures.  I wish I could have one right now...but will have to wait.

  • I drive a Pontiac Torrent. I was thinking about trading it in for a smaller car with better gas mileage but I can't imagine trying to mess with a car seat in anything but an SUV. I don't want a mini van. If we need a bigger car we will probably get an SUV with a 3rd row seat. This is our first so I'm not worried about space yet. I've had my car for 5 years so when I'm done with school I will probably trade it in for a down payment and get a new SUV.

  • We recently got a AWESOME deal on a 2002 Volvo XC V70 which I am I LOVE with! It seats 7 but doesn't look like it at all. Tons of space to grow into and I love that it's cross country so its safe for my little one :) plus it was only 2600! Yeah Party!!!

  • Our main family car will be a Toyota Camry!  We love it and think it'll be the perfect size for 3 of us.  We will probably upgrade to an SUV when we have #2.

  • When we decided to start TTC I owned a 4 door F150 with a slight lift. I told my husband I was ready to downgrade to save on gas and because I couldn't imagine trying to get a child in and out of vehicle when I had to use the side steps to get into the truck. When looking for a new vehicle we looked into safty and the longevity of the vehicle and decided on the Mercedes Bens C-300. Its not the largest vehicle but it is much better on gas milage, the backseat is big enough to comfortably fit our carseat and the trunk is quite large so I can fit plenty of stuff in there. My husband drives a Jeep Commander so if for some reason I start to run out of space I will just switch up with him.

  • 4runner. Enough room for us, with #2 on the way. Car seats fit. Trunk space is big enough.

We may upgrade...but not right away. More like a few years from now.

  • I drive a Honda Civic and my SO has a Dodge truck (no backseats, definitely not a family car, and I hate the bumpiness of the ride). My Civic's life will probably end in another year so we looked for something new and decided on the Hyundai Tucson to get next month.
  • We have a Toyota Sienna and I absolutely love it!  I used to be one of those anti minivan people like some of the PP.  We had a Toyota Highlander but with two kids and traveling a lot to visit family, we found that we really did need the extra room that the van offers.  Now with a third baby on the way, I could not imagine having any other vehicle!

  • I drive a 2008 Chevy Aveo (the sedan not the 5 door). DH and I are "planning" on two children and I'll be happy keeping my car or (if needed) purchasing a similar car later on. I've never even thought of a mini van. If you and YH think that it will be needed eventually it's worth looking into since you need a new car now. Try to determine how much time you want between children and approximately how long it'll be until you're done. If it's going to be 10 years anyway than IMO you're okay with a smaller car this time around. GL

  • I have a Grand Jeep Cherokee 2011.  I bought it 19 months ago before we had our first.  I knew I wanted to have a few kids and close in age so I really should have got a car that can fit 3 car seats.  When #2 arrives there will be no more room.

If you plan on having 2+ kids and keep your car for more then 2 years then go for the mini van or suv w/ 3rd row

  • I drive a Dodge Nitro. DH has a Ford Mustang. We have checked and it does fit a carseat in the back if need be. It won't be the preferred car and as a family, we'll always use the Nitro. However, DH will have a base for the carseat in case he ever needs to take our LO and the I'm gone with the Nitro.

Although, to be completely honest, we probably won't have the Mustang for that much longer anyway. DH already misses driving an SUV. We'll likely end up trading it in within the next year or so.

  • I have a '10 Nissan Versa Hatchback. Bought it brand new three years ago and LOVE it. It has a HUGE back seat and extra space behind. Right now (pre-baby) the backseats are almost always down for the dogs, but when baby comes the seats will go back to normal and I imagine I'll have plenty of room for baby, stroller, etc.
  • We traded in our luxury vehicle and got a Nissan Murano when DD1 was born, which we felt was a good decision. I still like this midsized SUV a lot, and it will be plenty big enough with a lot of storage space when DD 2 arrives.

  • I had a Colbalt and traded it in about a year and a half ago for a Toyota Rav4. I love it! It'll be great for LO and there's room for at least 2 LOs in the back seat plus tons of storage in the trunk. My gas mileage is about the same with my Rav as it was with the Colbalt.

My H just got a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. It wasn't my first choice but he really wanted it and it is large enough for the family. He used to drive a F-150, which he loved and was almost paid off, but it was only a 2 seater so it had to go!

  • When DD was born I was driving an '04 Honda Civic and SO was driving a Chevy truck dunno the kind with 4 doors. We weren't in a position financially to buy a new car, so the truck was the family car. Last year we sold the Honda and bought a 2012 Acadia I love it. It's bigger than what we need right now, it can seat 7 and we'll be done after 2 is born, but if we wanted to go anywhere with others it is beneficial I'm usually the one driving when we're with my family since its the only car that will fit more than 5. Anyway, it's got a ton of space in the back, third row seat but still a ton of space behind actually bigger than a Tahoe, and they lay flat too so you can pack a lot in. Anyway good luck. My sister has an Equinox which is great also, we looked at it too but didn't want to have to upsize in a few years when we started carting around sports equip., friends, etc..

  • Reading these posts kind of makes me nervous, we gave a 1978 Pontiac trans am and are about to buy a 2000 Pontiac trans am. My husband is a mechanic and that was the most sensible car I could talk him into. Seriously, the first thing he said when he found out I was pregnant was that he would die if he had to sell his car. Ridiculous.

  • I have a ford escape - when my payments are up I plan to go bigger - probably a Yukon or Tahoe
  • We have a Ford Focus and a Ford Mustang. The Focus will obviously be the family car. For one child we are confident it will be large enough. I don't plan to drive a mini-van ever and I don't know that we need it. My family made it with 2 kids in a Ford Explorer just fine. We had a Ford Escape that we loved but it wass totaled earlier this year. We hope to be able to buy another SUV soon.

  • I drive an 04 Lexus IS300 and put it up for sale last weekend. Its rear-wheel drive which means I go in circle when there's even a little snow on the ground. I've been looking for something a bit bigger like a Toyota Rav4, Ford Explorer or Sport Trac but I can't make a decision. My boyfriend is looking now too.. he has an 97 Mazda Miata... it has two seats and needs to go. I can hardly get in and out of it as I'm getting bigger. We will see.

  • I drove an economy car up until about a month ago, and it accommodated DD, but minimally. Now that #2 is on the way, though, I had to upsize to a Chrysler Pacifica with 3rd row seating to make sure there will be room for the double stroller, 2 car seats, diaper bag... and DH. Lol
  • My DH and I share a Honda Accord right now, (we don't have kids YET,) but we're thinking we're going to need a second car pretty soon. We plan to have at least 4 tykes, so we're thinking we may as well buy a bigger car now, than buying a little one and having to get a bigger one later. Either way, eventually it'll be nice to have a car that can fit the whole family.
