Babymoon - out of the US?

So we are trying to find a place to run away to for a bit of calm before April. Anyone have suggestions of where to go - beachy - in December? I've heard some say not to go to Mexico but others say it's fine.

thoughts? Suggestions?

Re: Babymoon - out of the US?

  • Ive never been but as long as it's a resort in Mexico i think it's fine. My friends just honeymooned @ Riviera Maya in Mexico (in may 2012 & never had an issue) Also, look at applevacations.com for some good deals! GL

  • Some may disagree but I think Mexico is fine. If you're smart about it and are staying on a well known 5 star resort you shouldn't have any trouble. Anywhere you go there's always a chance of something happening. We went to the Myan Riviera in 2011 and had a great time even with my 7 month old who didn't sleep. We stayed at the Grand Paladium resort and it was awesome.
  • I'm a travel agent and I have been to Mexico and had a great time. If you are staying on a resort you will be fine. You get a lot for your money in Mexico, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic. I wasn't sure about the Dominican Republic but I enjoyed that when we renewed our Vows back in January.

We did go on a Cruise round Europe in July I would of been approx 4 months pregnant at that time but  I miscarried.

Some airlines require written consent from your OB to fly just check with the airline if and when you book.

I wish I could go on a baby moon... :(

oh! be sure to look into travel insurance. We normally use travel guard they have different levels of insurance based on your age and the cost of your vacation. They cover pre-existing conditions too which most won't I don't think. We only use this when we are traveling out of the USA.

  • I'm sorry to say something you probably already know, don't mean to be annoying, but just keep in mind that if you go to Mexico you'll have to be careful about finding bottled water to drink!
  • a baby...moon?  Like, a vacation without children?  I think I vaguely remember those.

  • ..lurking from TTGP....

We went on our honeymoon to Sandals Whitehouse resort in Jamaica. It was beautiful! We did not leave the resort though. I did notice some pregnant women when I was there and thought that I would have still enjoyed my experience there if I was pregnant and couldn't drink all the rum drinks!

It's easy to find bottled water. It's stocked in your hotel room. You ask for it at the restaurant/cabana/etc. You SHOULD ask if the ice is made w/ bottled water and if it's not, then skip the ice.

Water isn't really a problem anymore. Most resorts have water treatment facilities on site. Most people get sick from eating and drinking too much or eating differently than they usually do. I've never been sick in Mexico.
  • We went to Pacific coast of Mexico in 2011 when I was about 6 months pregnant. No issues.

    Yup, this.

  • My friends went to London and LOVED it.

I was a missionary kid to Mexico and spent weeks there at a time. I never once felt unsafe or anything, for health or well-being. Especially if you go to a resort along the coast or in the mountains; they are made to cater to Americans and other visitors and are usually the most comfortable.

You must have only stayed in a resort and not eaten outside of it.

OP, ask how they purify their water.  If they do it with chlorine, it's hard on your system and will upset your stomach.  BTDT.  I've stayed in two resorts in Mexico and one did it with chlorine.  You also need to use only purified or bottled water for brushing your teeth.  Don't open your mouth in the shower unless all of the water is purified.  Same goes for eating fresh fruits and vegetables from the resort unless all of their water is purified, as they'll wash them with the water.

If you're a resort person, then my travel style is very different than yours.  DH and I are more "ground roots" travelers.  We find resort food bland and boring, as we're always trying true local fare and trying to get the real feel for where we are.  We are very simply not resort people.

Mexico has very beautiful cities and sites.  I'm sad that they're so overtaken by drug lords and kidnappings right now that I don't feel comfortable taking DH or DS there.  Resorts are usually safer, if you stay on them.  If you do go, be careful and be smart.  RickSteves.com has great travel tips.  Also, don't flash money, and by that, I mean don't wear anything flashy, don't bring your valuables, keep your money and your passports in your money belt (unless you're on the resort property, then keep them in the safe) and keep a limited amount of cash in your pockets.  "Don't flash money" actually goes for anywhere you go.  I'm always amazed at how many people I see violating that crucial rule.

We did our babymoon in Italy.  It was a great trip!   The only hard part is that every bathroom is after eight million stairs and a very long hallway.  Well, that and you can't drink the fabulous wine.  And the long flight.  We also traveled in the winter, which I quite like.  We've done that to several European countries. Granted, I'm from a warm climate, so cold and snow are novel to me.  It actually snowed when we were in Florence and the Florentines acted just like we do here when it snows.  It was funny.  It apparently doesn't snow there either!  They also wear super heavy coats in 50 degree weather.  They looked at us like we were crazy as we were only in light fleece jackets!
