10 cm...

So I'm looking over my childbirth class materials, and I find a diagram of dilation. Um. 10 cm is ENORMOUS. My vagina is going to get that huge all by itself??? Does this freak anyone else out? Birth is so nasty.  :)

    Yes.  It is gross.  And it doesn't "shrink" back down for weeks!!!

    I think it's awesome.  It's as close as I'll ever come to knowing what it's like to get an erection.  It's not just boys who can suddenly become massive.  BWAHAHAHAHA.

    Haha DH got out the ruler the other day and was like HOLY SH!T that's huge! I had never really looked at it before but it really is way bigger than I thought about.

    Technically, it's your cervix that dialates to 10cm... the baby's head seems to be a bit bigger than that (hence the bones in LOs skull aren't fused, so the head can be squeezed out). The shoulders are actually the widest part to get out.

    I feel like it's big for my lady bits to get, but it still seems small considering the human that needs to get through it.  It's like, the size of a bagel.  Babies are way bigger than bagels.

    I'm still hoping for the stork.

    Sorry if TMI, but... 

    take a look at the 10cm, then look at the size of the average newborns head.  What amazes me, is that between the two of you (mom dilating to 10 and possibly tearing for another cm or 2 and baby's head squishing), that babies actually fit through that small of an opening to begin with.

    Oh and FTR, I've been through it once, delivered a 9lbr and everything tightened right back up, although I know it looks different, it still works pretty much the same as it did before! LOL!

    Just seeing the title of this thread makes me shudder lol 10cm is so big for that area and even though I delivered my son, it still gives me the creeps.

    I pretty much freak out whenever I see the diagram. I can understand the tissue stretching to accommodate a baby. What is hard for me to imagine is the cervix opening up like that on it's on. Like it's the jaws of life. God.
