Hard/swollen ducts vs. Clogged ducts

So I have to wake up in the night to pump.... my breasts get very engorged, hurt, and turn hard. I feel these very hard lumps and I think "crap, I'm getting clogged ducts again" but after I pump they turn soft again. Are they just hard because they are swollen with milk and soften again after I feed/pump? Or are they "on their way" to becoming clogged ducts but I pump just in time to stop them from getting any worse? I have to pump every 2 hours to avoid this from happening and it's getting so old. Anyways, just curious what you've all experienced with this (if any).

Thanks!

  • That is what I am doing now - pumping to relieve them.  I don't have an answer, just the same issue.

  • It sounds like you are getting to them just in time! My experience with clogged ducts has been a large portion of the breast gets hard and isn't easily relieved by pumping or nursing. Now that LO will sleep 5 or 6 hours at night I too find myself pumping to get engorgement to go away! That and I can't sleep on my stomach.

  • I stopped pumping two weeks ago today for this very reason. I'm really feeling for you, Basil. I hope this problem works itself out for you. My experience was terrible and I'll tell you, I'm a much happier and bonded mom since stopping. You obviously have to do what's right for you, but just know you have options. Good luck!
