At about 8 months, we put the mattress on the floor without a box-spring. I have rails up on either side. He's rolled off the end a few times, but it is so low he's never gotten hurt at all.
The room is baby-proofed, so if he wakes up quietly, he can wander around and not get hurt. We keep the bedroom door closed while he naps, but only b/c the gate we had won't work in the doorway.
I should mention that his/our bed is in the guestroom, and my husband sleeps in the master bedroom alone (and that bed is still on a frame) :-/

I never worried much about napping because I was always awake and nearby so I'd hear the kids as they woke. You could also make a little pallet on the floor you could use just for naps
