Glucose testing

According to my MW I hit the genetic lottery (Her words) and am predisposed to get Gestational Diabetes, due to my family history. So I get to be tested twice, once this upcoming weekend at 11 weeks, then again at 24 weeks!

This is all my Dad?s fault it comes from his side of the family, and I HATE having my blood drawn! To make it up to me I?m going to have him buy me a pony.

Anyone else a genetic winner and needing to be tested early?

  • Just curious; what's the history that predisposes you, if you don't mind sharing? We have several cases of diabetes on both sides of the family and no one has ever mentioned 11 week testing to me. Thanks!

  • Me! Hello I'm new to the board.  But I had my first glucose test last friday already. My suggestion is to ask your doctor for a perscription to go see a dietician.  They can give you a diebetic diet to get on so you can prevent having gestational diabetes!   The worse part is drinking the sugar water they give you before you get your blood drawn!  I find out my results tomorrow! Good luck to you.

  • During my last pregnancy I was tested somewhere between 9 - 12w for GD because of family history.  I passed that test but then failed my GD test at 28w and dealt with it for the rest of my pregnancy.  Its different for everyone.  I was able to control it through my diet alone (no insulin) and DS was 7lb 13oz (not a gigantic baby).

  • I actually asked for an early test because I feel like I'm not processing sugar very well right now. I know I would fail the glucose test big time right now, so they just did an A1C blood draw last week to see what my averages were for the past 3 months and we'll start there.  I did not have GD with my last pregnancy, but I did fail the one hour test. Then I had to do the 3 hour test....that's always fun......fasting, then super gross sugary water, then getting your blood drawn 4 times in 3 hours.  Yippy!  On that one, I failed the 1 hour but passed 2 and 3 hour tests so that determined I was just processing sugar slowly but still didn't have GD.

I'm also curious what they determine to be your winning lotto numbers.  My mom's family has a very strong history of diabetes but it hasn't come up at all as being a factor that leads me to have a greater chance of being diabetic during pregnancy.

My Grandfather, My Father and his two brothers all have type two diabetes. I must admit they are all big guys, and that none of them try all that hard to control it without insulin.

The MW just felt it was worth the extra test to be safe.

  • I had GD with my last pregnancy.  It was weird because I only gained 15 pounds and I was average-low weight to begin with.  I could control my sugar with a strict diet and ended up having a 7lb 6 oz baby. Either way, my doctor hasn't said anything about testing me early.  I am pretty happy about this because I can only keep down carbs right now.

  • I had GD with my first pregnancy, despite having exactly zero risk factors for it. Sad The worst part was the 3 hour test and I'm not looking forward to that at all! My OB said at my first appointment that since my was so easily controlled by a very loose diet and I didn't have any complications with it, they'll do the 1 hour test at 20 weeks. If I pass that, they'll do the 1 hour again at 24, and if I pass that, they'll do one last 1 hour at 28 weeks. If I fail any of those, they'll do the 3 hour and go from there.

  • Me too!  YAY! Hmm

I was tested last week and will be again around 24/26 and 30/32.  I passed my test last week so one down, 2 to go.  Despite my genetic slurry of misfortune they let me slide last time around since everything we going okay so I only had to do 2 with DS but then he had to go and be a giant monster baby (10 lbs 8 oz) so I get the bonus testing this time.  Let me tell you, I'm super jazzed.
