Baby Names

Do you think Lucy should be short for something?

Lucy Elizabeth is the girls name we've picked.  My sister keeps insisting that she doesn't like it because Lucy should be short for something longer.. i.e. Lucille, Luciola (I don't like either).

I'm ok to completely ignore her, I normally do; but thought I'd check on here.

TIA!

  • Thanks!  It seems like a double standard on her part, because she isn't offended by our boy name, which is John David, not Jonathan.

  • It can be a nn for Lucille, Lucinda, etc, but Lucy is a full name on its own. It's the English version of Lucia.

  • I like Lucy all on it's own.  I don't care for any of the longer names, either.  If you plan to call her Lucy, let her be Lucy!

  • Stick with Lucy Elizabeth! I like it much better than any of the longer versions.

  • I used to worry about this myself. But then I realized no one is accusing Mary of being a NN for Maria, so why should Lucy?  Lucy is the English version of Lucia, not a NN.

  • If we have a girl Lucy (just Lucy) will be her name too!  I think its fine on its own.  4 Elizabeth is our #2 MN by the way! Its also my MN.  As of now we are going with Jo as the MN in honor of the generations of Josephs from my DH on up!
  •  Luciola! Is that a real name? It sounds very silly, almost like Luci-cola. I vote for Lucicola, or I'd go for Luciola if you want her to be a magician. ;)

I'd just name her Lucy. I don't think anybody expects there to be more to it. Plus there a plenty of people who are just named "John," or "Matt," without having to be "Johnathan" or "Matthew."

  • I like it as a NN and as a full name. Ignore your sister - if Lucy is the name you love then go for it. I think it's lovely :)

  • I think Lucy is fine on it's own.

I don't think you can use John as an argument though.  John and Jonathan, although they have the same roots, aren't the same name.  It would be like saying Mark shouldn't stand alone because of Markus.

If you had named your son Jon, I could see the argument, because that spelling is traditionally a nn.  So if she was ok with Jon, she should be ok with Lucy.

Really, she should be ok with Lucy anyway, since it is not only known as a nn for Lucille, but is also the English variant of Lucia (like Mary and Maria as pp said).

  • Lucy IS a proper, complete name.  Just like Mary or Rose are also complete and proper.

  • IMO, Lucy can stand alone.
  • No. Lucy is a great name and does not need to be short for anything.

  • It is just fine on its own. My granddaughter is Lucienne (Lus-yen), also called Lucie. Both grandfathers are named Lucien and both families have French last names.
