Wasn't sure whether or not I should post this on the nutrition board or here, but here's my question:
My mom has always had nutrition issues. We're both naturall very skinny, but she's always had issues eating enough. When my mom had me and my 2 sibs she said that as soon as she tried anything other BF we stopped wanting her milk, she thinks it's because she never gave herself enough calories and nutrients to keep her milk filling and nutritious. It's really important to me to be able to BF for at least the first year like the recommend (crossing my fingers that all goes well!), I'm thinking a high calorie diet would be best.
Any ideas?
Re: High calorie diet for BF
BF does burn calories, so you want to make sure your body is taking in enough. I usually try to eat about 500+ over what I ate pre-pregnancy. Also, it's not just the calories, but what you are eating. Things rich in iron and protein are important - like almonds, oatmeal, lentils, chickpeas, salmon, avocado, etc. Dr. Sears has a list of top 20 foods BFing moms should eat. Also check out www.kellymom.com. It's a great BFing resource. There is information related to nutrition and diet on the site.
this is what i wrote in response to a post a couple days ago about calorie intake and supply.
not eating well can mess with supply. ?there were/are days i miss an entire meal altogether. ?i have never written anything down. ?i just try to eat healthy meals and keep snack food around (banana or apple, bowl of cereal, whole wheat toast with peanut butter, pita and hummus, blueberry muffin) so that i can grab something quick if i need to and can snack between meals. ?i always drink a glass of milk before bed with my vitamins. ?if you are hungry, eat!
so basically, snack all day (healthy snacks) and eat if you are hungry! food to add into your diet (if not already) that are very nutritious are?quinoa?(naturally has DHA), wheat berries, oatmeal, and a glass of milk a day. ?eat whole grains, lean protein and lots of fruit and veggies. you need to focus on nutritious food over high calorie food. ?it doesn't take much to add extra calories. ?adding a few snacks in will take care of that.
