Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Possible verbal delay...Not talking yet :( Anyone Else?

So went to the pediatrician for DS 9 mo appointment and DR. made a big deal about the fact that DS isn't making vowel sounds yet- he does seems to really only grunt (many different variations) or cry and only occansionally babbels.  My gut says that 9 mo is too young to start worrying about this, but I am wondering if he is really the only 9 mo old that isn't making many vowels sounds and definitely has not said any words.  So please share your thoughts and experience. Thanks Ladies!

TTC#1 May 2009- July 2010 on our own with no luck

Started with RE in August 2010, dx with unexplained IF and then finally our 3rd IUI cycle using Follistim and Trigger resulted in our wonderful little man.  Born 12/2/11

TTC#2 Never really prevented, but were careful early on as Dr. reccomended

Surprise BFP 12/16/13, started progesterone immediately as first numbers came back low, but betas were good.  Progesterone wasnt enough. Natural MC 12/24/13.

  • At DDs 9 month she wasn't making much noise either - basically what you say your LO does.  Our dr wasn't concerned so neither was I.  Lo and behold a week later (and no more paci - not sure if it's related) she was babbling up a storm.  She has all sorts of "words" now - mama, dada, nana, baba, etc. She adds more sounds everyday and it's been less than a month since her appt.    I wouldnt worry just yet either :)

  • My baby says the "ba" and "da" sound. She is on track. However, i was looking at my 12 year olds baby book the other day and he did not say the "ba" sound untill 10 months. He did end up being diagnosed with a speech delay and other delays at age three. Everything is fine now and its really not a huge deal ( don't freak out). Just keep and eye on it and get help as soon as it is recommended.. ( if it ever is).

  • Mine didn't start babbling till a week after his 9 month appointment. But at that appointment the doctor said that some babies don't start talking until 1 year, and that's still considered normal. So I wouldn't fret just yet.

  • My son is not crawling and he's not babbling with sounds beginning with consonants. Last week at his 9 month the pedi actually referred me to a physical therapist for the crawling, which surprised me. He has to go back next month for a second flu shot and she told me she wanted a report about his talking at that point.

I wasn't too worried about it until the doctor reacted, so...dunno, I think we're in a similar boat.

He does make sounds that sound like "hi" and "eeyas" but our doctor did not seem impressed with that.

  • It is a little too young to start worrying. But keep an eye on it and by or right around 12 months you should have Mama Dada and 1 other word. It you don't.....I would keep reading, singing and telling your baby everything that you are doing.

Maybe start with mama mama, babababa, dadadadada. And that is it.  THey should start to imitate you.

From personal experience (I have a 30 month old that is verbally delayed at 18 months) If you are still not having sounds or a few words and toddler not imitating you at 14-15 months please seek help from your Ped and if possible call a speech therapist in your city to have them evaluated.

Dont be alarmed yet, but follow thru and push for help if you have a feeling something is off. I pursued since DD was 18 months and it took until she was 27 months to finally have her in Speech Therapy.

My son is the same...no crawling or babbling consonants at all.  I've been worrying silently and am nervous about what the doctor will say.  He went for his 8 month visit last month and isn't seen again until his 10 month check-up.

  • 9 months is WAY too early to become concerned about this. My nephew didn't start speaking until age 2, and he is the smartest boy in his third grade class. Give it some time!

  • My DD has a lot of sounds but none of them mean anything, at least not to me.  I feel like 9 months old is still pretty young to be doing anything more than babbling.  The babies I know who didn't do much talking spent their time on other skills.  Don't worry about it.

Crawling isn't even a milestone. Plenty of kids never do it and just go right to walking. Are you sure that was the full reason you were referred to a PT?

Absolutely yes. It's specifically written on the doctors orders: " child not crawling, referral to physical therapy for evaluation and treatment."

She acknowledged that his muscle tone wasn't there and she said while it isn't completely unheard of, if we had the time and our insurance covered it, we should consider PT. I was surprised too.

  • Ever since about 2 months, I found a video on youtube that teaches kids the Alphabet and I would sit our son in front of the computer screen and he would watch it and now that he is 11 months he is making all those sounds that you hear in that video! What's crazy is he has been saying Dad or Daddy for months now and has yet to say Mom or Mommy! My GF is not too happy about that! LOL!

If your LO has low tone, he should absolutely be evaluated. Babies with low tone really need to learn to crawl. If they go straight to walking, then the strength sometimes never comes.

(my son has low tone and has been in pt for awhile now)
