How far are you from your chosen hospital/birthing center?

I chose the hospital where my midwife delivers.  I didn't even consider other hospitals (maybe that's my mistake).  This particular hospital has a birthing center in the L&D wing specifically for midwives and their patients.  I love that.  Anyway, the hospital is within walking distance of my office.  It's so close, I can see the top 3 floors of the hospital from my office break room.  Because it's so close to my office, I guess I've never really thought about how far it is from home, even though I work the same distance from home (when I actually work in my office).  I just Google mapped it.  Our house is 40 minutes, or 27 miles, from the hospital.  I have no idea if that's really all that far.

  • 4 blocks, which is very comforting to me, and lets me labor at home longer if I want to.

  • I'm 20 miles and about 30 minutes from our hospital.  I also chose based on where my OBGYN delivers.  Fun fact I realized over the weekend:  I'm due race weekend.  I live two exits down from Texas Motor Speedway; this is only a problem when NASCAR is in town.  All of the locals become hermits that weekend to avoid the traffic and road closures.  I called my neighbors (police officers) crying about my little issue; I made them promise to be my police escorts to the hospital if I need them!  I'm relying on the fact that extremely few babies arrive on their due dates; ideally this baby will come before or after that weekend!

  • My home is 20-25 minutes from the hospital and my doc is 10 minutes from my work. So either way I feel pretty well covered.

  • I'm about a leisurely half hour away. I say it that way because you bet your ass DH will be getting us there faster when I'm in labor! In any case, there is a hospital 15 minutes closer (where FIL actually works) and we chose not to go there for two reasons: First, my OB does not have priviliges there and I had no intention to change doctors. Second, their c-section rate is 48.6%. I don't know personally anyone that has delivered there vaginally. That worried me and was not an incentive to seek out a new OB for the sake of delivering closer to home. I'm very happy with my choice because of what my hospital does offer- skin to skin for at least an hour after birth, they promote rooming in, they are very respectful of EBF and don't offer pacifiers or bottles, etc.

  • I'm also 40-45min from our hospital.  There are 2 closer, but one is TERRIBLE and the other we just opted out of.  Considering my labor with DS2 was 3hrs from water breaking to delivery, I'm a bit nervous about this.  If this is your, OP, first baby, I wouldn't worry at all about the 40min drive.  Most 1st labors take 12hrs or more.

  • I'm about 10-15 minutes away from my hospital, depending on traffic.

  • I may win for the farthest away...we are around 2 hours 15 minutes from our hospital!  Its the closest large hospital in our area.  About 120 miles miles (mind you our nearest Walmart and McDonalds is also 120 miles away).  We really live in the middle of no-where.  We are going to try and plan accordingly so when labor starts we will head up asap, my parents live in that town so we will bring DD1 with us and they can pick her up at the hospital to stay with them while we have baby!

  • I live in the suburbs and my hospital is downtown.  About 40 minutes with no traffic.  But if it's rush hour it could take quite a bit longer.  I wanted a hospital with a high level NICU just in case.  Last time I was induced early for medical reasons so it wasn't an issue, but I do wonder what will happen this time!  I think my DH stresses about it more than I do though.

  • There is a hospital that's 15 minutes away and I will go to that one if there is an emergency; however the one I chose (newer/nicer) is 40 minutes away. They are just different branches of the same hospital, but my doc prefers the 2nd one. I think 40 min will be do-able, then again I'm sure that DH will be speeding and it won't take quite that long...

  • Right new we are 30 min away.  But we will be moving before the baby comes, and most likely switching hospitals.

  • Yikes! I'm a good 45-1hr (depending on traffic) away from my chosen hospital. This hospital is awesome and has the best baby care around which to me justifies my drive. Plus I was born there! : )

  • The hospital I will be delivering at, with no traffic, is 15 minutes away, during heavy traffic times it would be 25-30 minutes.

I haven't been too worried about it. Actually I haven't given it too much thought. There is another hospital less than 5 minutes from my house, but I didn't choose that one, because it's proximity was about its only appeal (it's a good hospital, but other personal reasons).

I honestly think any distance will seem like an eternity on "The Big Day", so I don't want to stress about it, ya know?

  • The hospital I will be delivering at is 10 minutes/10 miles from home.  It's the same hospital I was born at and DD1 was born at.  My Dr. Only delivers in this hospital,so that is the main reason for going to this one.  I have no reservations about it though.

  • 10-15 minutes without traffic, 20-25 with traffic or if we take surface roads. We used to live 5 minutes away, which was really nice when DD#1 was born. It's still not too bad though.

  • 45 minutes

As far as 'FTMs usually labor longer-' that was BS for me. I'll be lucky if I make it to the hospital, haha- ugh.

  • It's on the opposite side of town, but not far by car. With little to no traffic, it's 10 minutes away, with traffic it's up to 40 minutes away.

  • We're 15-20 mins away from the only hospital around here that delivers babies!! lol It's known to be the best maternity hospital in Canada, though. We were both born there... :)

  • From home, 25 minutes; from work, 45 minutes.  I also have a plan B, which is the city hospital 5 minutes from my office.  My OB group has privileges at both, so I'm comforted knowing if there is an emergency, I can be just as well taken care of.

  • I'm delivering at the hospital I work at, so it's about a 5 minute walk over to L&D if I'm at work.  We live about 4 miles from the hospital, which is about a 10-15 minute drive depending on traffic. I chose to deliver at this hospital because 1) It's best covered by my insurance, and 2) It's the only hospital nearby with midwives.

  • There are two within 5 minutes of us...  One in one direction, one in the other!  I've decided on the one that has a recently remodeled OB wing with all private rooms.  It's also on the same floor as my OB's office so it's nice and convenient, and we're familiar with it.

My 2nd labor was 29 hours, so I'm not really concerned.

  • We're like 30 minutes from the hospital. There are a bunch of them that are closer but I loooove my OB/GYN and wouldn't even think of going somewhere that she couldn't deliver him at. There's one that is probably 5 minutes from where I live but I'd rather drive out and have my doctor not some stranger.

  • 45 minutes.  Not too worried about it in general.  I'm just worried that DH will make me leave sooner than I want to bc he'll be worried that he'll have to deliver the baby on the side of the road or something.

  • The hospital is 25 minutes from my house and it's also where I work. I've joked with my husband that I kind of wouldn't mind going into active labor while at work because I would just hop on the elavator and go down one floor, L&D is directly below me.

With my first, I was about 30 minutes away from the hospital and that really posed no problems.

  • It depends on traffic - ideally it would take us about 12 minutes, but it could take up to 45 if it's around rush hour or if the Red Sox have a home game.

  • We are about 3-10 minutes from our hospital.. depending on the time of day and the traffic level at that time.
  • Right now we're only 10 minutes from the hospital, but we're moving next month and will be about an hour and a half away.
  • Probably about 5 minutes now, but with DS1 I was 2 hours away.  (We moved when I was 35 weeks pregnant and I didn't want to switch doctors).

  • We're about 8.5 miles from the birth center, which is a 15-minute drive with normal traffic.  Rush hour traffic tends to double or even triple the travel time.

  • 40 miles...but in the D.C. area, it could take hours during rush hour.  My last appointment it took 1 hour, 20 min. to get there.

I moved here recently and have military insurance.  I am actually trying to get a waiver to go to a closer hospital.  I would definitely like to be closer!

  • I'm envious of all you ladies that are close to yours! We are at least an hour and 30 mins away. Thats not counting the time it will take to drop off DS and get someone to my house to drive me if my DH is working... I have been stressing about this but I figure the more time I have at home the better this time!
