June 2012 Moms

would you hire a male babysitter?

So I put up an ad on the local college classifieds & have had some guys apply.  I told DH I didn't want to hire a male sitter because men are more likely to be molesters than women.  He thinks I'm being paranoid.  Maybe I am because I'm nervous about leaving LO with a stranger.  I tried to get a sitter recommendation from friends but couldn't find anyone.  (Of course I will be interviewing these folks & calling their references)  WWYD?

Re: would you hire a male babysitter?

  • I don't think a male sitter is more likely to molest your baby than a woman, thats a bit naive to think IMO

If a male is qualified- I'd hire him.

  • I have guy friends watch my son, it's nice since Ryan gets a different type of interaction.

If you are uncomfortable with a male regardless of your reasons, hire a woman.

     Check out Care.com

The company says they do background checks on all the sitters and other moms post their recommendations.

  • yeah....I'm one that wouldn't hire a stranger (male)...But I would hire a family member or a friend I personally knew very well.

  • I never said all men are child molesters.  But statistically, men are more likely to be abusive than women.  Like I said, I am probably being paranoid.  I haven't left LO with a sitter yet, we have no family nearby and leaving him with a stranger is making me very nervous.

But thanks for the insults.  Very helpful.

    Ditto for me.

And I completely understand op's paranoia... It's a big deal to leave your little bundle with a stranger!

Lurking but just trying to help.  Know the facts.

"National statistics indicate that in approximately 88 percent of the cases, the offender is known to the victim. He/she is usually a relative, family member, family friend, baby-sitter or older friend of the child."

Also, not to increase our paranoia or anything, but background checks are generally pretty useless when it comes to identifying sexual predators.  96% of sex crimes are perpetrated by individuals not on any sex offender registry.

Yes, I have seen this...When I say family member, I'm talking my dad or father in law or my brother. AND I know and can bet my life on it, that they would never do anything to harm my child.

You're not lurking silly goose, oh I mean AllisonMarie22. This is such an odd post for you to reply on.
Also, I will only hire people I know to watch my child, but if I trust a male more than a female, so be it.

So in a nutshell this means 4% of sex crimes could happen if their father is a pedophile...
