April 2013 Moms

When does 2nd trimester start.. 13 or 14 weeks?

I am confused. So many different websites say different things. some say it starts at 13 and some say 14.. the bump says 14. thoughts? I know if you divide 40 weeks by 3 trimesters you get 13.33 which explains why its right in the middle of both.

Re: When does 2nd trimester start.. 13 or 14 weeks?

  • 13 week 3 days. Most people just say that by 12 weeks you are into your second trimester.

And you want another fun number?

As far as how many "months" along you are...

Every 4w4d you change months.  So at 9w1day you are 2 months along, since technically you are pregnant for 10 but no one accepts anything more than 9.  :)

That one I played around with on my own :)

I have never understood the math on the 10 months thing.  My LMP was in July, so starting there: July to August = 1 month + August-September= 2 months + to October=3 months + to November = 4 months + to December = 5 months + to January = 6 months + to February = 7 months + to March = 8 months + to EDD in April = 9 months.

  • Thanks to the OP. I've always been confused by this myself. One of my baby books says you're in the second trimester at 12w and I thought that didn't add up.

I think part of the confusion stems from the oft-cited statistic that once you hit 12w, your risk of m/c goes down to about 1%. (It is 12w, isn't it?)

OB's count pregnancy starting the day of your last LMP which technically adds 2 weeks to your pregnancy which is a total of 40 weeks.  If you measure a month in 4 week increments, it turns out to be 10.  (40 / 4 =10)    However, 4 weeks = 28 days and a calendar, most months are a few days more than that.   So it's 9 calendar months but 10 months if you measure in 4 week increments.

  • Thank you for posting this.  I was wondering myself.  Praying that that so called 'pregnancy glow' will kick in at 13w3d.
