Everyone has a few names in their pocket that they love but won't use for whatever reason. What are yours?
Mine - Atticus and Oliver for boys and Ruby for a girl. Atticus Finch is one of my favorite literary characters but it sort of a harsh sounding name. I love Oliver too - but I know two people who have dogs named Oliver so it has now become a "dog name" for me.
Ruby is one of those cute names on a baby and totally a normal name for a grown woman but DH hates it.
Re: Just for fun - names you love but won't use
It's much easier to come up with this list than an actual names list.
Boys:
Owen- I love this name, but when I met DH he already had a nephew named Owen.
Aidan- I have loved this name since I was a kid (and had a crush on my cousin's neighbor Aidan), but it has become way to popular
Cormac- DH and I love this name, but It just does not work with our last name
Damian- I love this name, but the kid from The Omen ruined it forever.
Girls:
Phoebe- DH doesn't like it
Sinead- DH and I love this one, but it's association with a certain bald singer sort of ruins it
Fiona- I now can't think of anything but Shrek's wife
BFP#1 11/12/11 ~ No heartbeat 12/12/11 ~ D&C 12/19/11
BFP#2 3/25/12 ~ Heartbeat 141 4/16/12 ~ No heartbeat 4/25/12 ~ D&C 04/30/12
BFP#3 7/16/12 ~ EDD 3/26/13 ~ It's a BOY ~ DOB 2/26/13
I'm actually on the fence about one that I love...
Phoebe is one of my favorites, works great with the MN we have picked (the MN is my MN, my dad's MN, and his mom's maiden name, so we are very set on it)... BUT it's the name of my childhood dog. I don't think of it as a dog's name in particular - I've come across plenty of humans named Phoebe and only one dog. But I'm worried it'll come off as too weird. It's not *that* weird to me, but I'm pretty sure I'd get a huge side-eye from everyone I know. 99% sure we won't use it :-/
Henry- one of our best friends named their son Henry, so I wouldn't feel right using it.
Audrey- becoming really popular, and DH's cousin (who I've never even met) named her daughter this, so it's officially out.
I would also love to use my maiden name, but it rhymes with my married name (and definitely not in a good way).
The Baloney Bug, A Blog
It's a girl!
I love the name Charlotte (from SATC) but DH won't go for it.
I also love boys names for girls: Ryan, Jordan etc. but no go with DH.
Emma and Isabelle were two of my favorites but way too popular now (stupid Friends & Twilight).
I find it way easier to come up with girls names than boys names.
Boy names I like but DH doesn't are: Bennett, Cole, Grady & Jackson
Girl names are: Isabella, Whitney & Paige
I am 100% in love with the name Aviendha. *sigh* If only...
I also love Evelyn (DH hates it). And I like Karah, but too close to my own name to use.
Lots of boy names I like, but DH hates: Eric and Derek, Phillip, Collin. So I use them in my stories instead. ;-)
Girls:
Elizabeth - I've always loved this name, wished this was my name as a kid. And it's my SIL's name. I could use it but I think that's weird. DH has an uncle who shares his name and it does get weird at family gatherings since they aren't Sr. and Jr.
Catherine - Another name I've loved forever. This was actually my confirmation name. Two reasons to not use it right now. 1) Growing in popularity due to Princess Kate. 2) Both of my SILs have named their children names that all start with that Ca sound: Kenedy, Camryn, and Keiran. My MIL said that shouldn't stop me, but I have an issue with it. I don't like names that sound alike. They all (yes all of them, both sisters and mom) have an issue in saying the correct name for them. Yeah my mom called me my sister's name sometimes, but never my cousin's name. I've relegated this to a middle name.
Boys:
Aidan - DH hates it and it's super popular
James - DH doesn't like it as a first name, he says it's fine as a middle name.
Alexander - I've always loved this name. I wanted to use the nickname Xander and yes from Buffy. DH hates it too.
Dean - Not sure why this just popped up on my radar recently, but I love it. Might have something to do with Supernatural. I haven't suggested it to DH yet, but I'm sure I'll still get a no.
LOVE this!!!! Makes me wish I'd thought of it.
Amelia- too close to DD's name
Olivia- we know too many IRL already
I have to admit I haven't given a ton of thought to boy names, since I really feel like this baby is a girl
I love the names:
Scarlett: Doesn't sound great with our last name, but I am still considering it.
Chloe: My friend just used it when she had her baby last year. She said she would be thrilled if I used it too, but eh, I don't know.
Clark: LOVE this for a boy, but it really doesn't sound right with our last name (our last name starts with a K, so the K sounds would blend together), damnit. Do you think my Hubs would be OK with changing our last name?
Emma is my all-time favorite girl's name ever since I was a kid. Darn Friends for making it so popular.
I also love the name Gus for a boy, but DH has put his foot down.

girl: Artemis, Clara
So glad that Oliver is because you know dogs with that name. Oliver is our current #1 for a boy.
We won't use Charles or Charlie. My cousin has two boys Carter and Charlie. I already used Carter so I can't take the other name too.
Girls':
Darcy - My #1 girl's name but DH vetoed it and it has the same first and last letter as our last name.
Piper & Harper - DH thinks they are not feminine enough.
Isabella - I loved this name, then Twilight happened.
Boys':
Colin - DH hates it.
Christian - Family name. Ruined now thanks to 50 Shades.
Geoffrey - Love this name with this spelling, but DH likes the name we first picked out for a boy and is sticking to it.
::MyBlog::
Let me first say that I am a teacher and so sadly some students have just ruined a few name for me! The bonus is I come across all kinds of names and have good associations as well. DH and I have both agreed that we like A names so we will probably start there. I have my list, but we agreed not to discuss until we know what we are having!
Girls:
-Elizabeth - a close friend's daughter is named Elizabeth so that is out.
-Gabrielle - DH's step sister's middle name and she is not one of his favorite people.
Boys:
- Paul - DH's step brother's name and he is a JERK!
BFP #2 - 7/1/12 - Met my lucky charm Alexandra on 3-16-13!!!
Valentine. I love it, but maybe a bit too out of my comfort zone. Maybe a middle name someday.
Noel for a boy, pronounced nole. DH doesn't like it.
ETA: Oh shoot! I thought I was on May '13. Sorry girls!
I like Giada (gee-ada) for a girl but I'm worried she'll be spelling it and correcting people on how to say her whole life, so we have decided against it.
For boys I really like Jackson but my husband says all he thinks of is Michael .. And I really wanted to use my maiden name Werner as a first or middle name but DH hates it lol
It worked for Superman.
We both like Lillian and Eleanor, but I think they're becoming too popular. Especially Eleanor with the nn Ellie.
We nearly named DD Charlotte, but a co-worker that I am friends with used the name a month before us, and it would've been weird for us to use Charlotte, too. I LOVE this name, though.
I also love Hazel, but DH won't go for it.
For boys, I love Graeme, but I don't think anyone will ever be able to pronounce it unless he moves to the UK. If we use it, we'll spell it Graham.
I also like Henry, but it's too common now.
Isla- It sounds ridiculous with our last name.
Leo- A cat I had.
Henry- A cat I have now.
My husband and I just joked we should use this for a middle name. We pass on family middle names and it's DH's father's father's middle name. It's amusing to us because it would piss off MIL (when she divorced DH's father she refused to let her kids have anything to do with his side of the family, including DH's half-sisters!). And right now, I'd get a kick out of pissing MIL off. ;-)
Oliver and Xavier - sound awful with our last name. Sad, because Oliver is my absolute favorite boy name.
Isobel - too popular.
