Is Sophie the Giraffe really worth it?

LO is teething and right now only likes to chew on my knuckle. That's fine for now, but when teeth come in, it's going to have to stop. So I've been trying to get him interested in teethers, and I've bought 4 so far (3 different ones came in one pack) and he side eyes every single one as if they're loaded with cyanide! So I looked up Sophie, since everyone swears by it, and it's $20! I;m really hesitant to shell out $20 on a teething toy, especially if there's no guarantee he won't hate it just like he hates the others. What do you all say? Worth it or just keep trying the cheapos? (Sorry for the block of text; for some reason my replies don't always allow me to format.)

Re: Is Sophie the Giraffe really worth it?

  • It depends on the kid. If he isn't interested in others then I wouldn't take the chance. My son was never interested in any teethers, and we had sophie and it didn't excited him either. DD, on the other hand, freaking flips out on that giraffe. I'm glad it is getting some use now!

  • L loves it and we got it for her over a month ago. I noticed she was frustrated with the other things she was biting on, mostly the shape and texture. With Sophie she can chew on the ears or legs and all seems like good sizes. She took to it right away and was able to hold it pretty good too. I personally recommend it!

  • I haven't bought it (Sophie) yet but I think I am going to pick it up tomorrow while I'm out. I think P will really like it.

  • I used to make fun of Sophie all the time, but then ds wanted to chew nonstop and couldn't hold on to things very well at that point. So I got Sophie and he loves it! Even when he is playing with other toys, he wants to play with Sophie too.

  • We have the smaller one with the handles & Lincoln loves it!

ETA: It's cheaper than the original one and I found mine on Amazon for $8.

  • My DD isn't that into her (yet).

  • Ari loves her... it's the only teething toy he will consistently hold on to and actually chew on.

  • I wondered the same thing as I saw Sophie at Sams Club over the weekend.   I think it was $14.99.   But DS has only showed interest in 1 of the 4 teething toys I've gotten... so wasn't sure if I should try it or not.

An alternative that might work and is cheaper is the crab from this bath toy set.

DD loved that darn crab but sadly he was lost on a Costo run.  His claws are great for gnawing and his eyeballs seemed to be a favorite when working on canines.

It isn't a teething toy - so you have to watch for wear and tear more closely, but the shape was good for teething.

Sophie was her favorite, but this crab was a close 2nd.

I have that crab! Well, actually, my 4 year old has it. She may be able to be convinced to give it up for the greater good, though.

  • At first, they preferred the smaller Sophie that has two half-rings attached because it was easier to hold and get in their mouths. They're starting to like Sophie more though, and it's bigger and easier to keep track of. I'm a fan.

  • You can always try the smaller, cheaper sophie teether first. If he doesn't like the smell of latex (this is usually what turns babies off Sophie, or so I have been told), it should be apparent right away.

  • My dd puts everything in her mouth and naws on everything, including fingers of all varieties.  Yet, she doesn't care too much about Sophie.  Glad it was a gift and I didn't spend my own money on it.

I'll have to check my local Sam's Club. Thanks for the input everyone!

  • I think every kid is different.  X also likes my fingers to chew on.  He has a ton of teething toys that he won't use.  But he does like Sophie.  I bring her with us in the car all the time and he chews on her.  So for me it would be worth it.
