Jury Duty

So I have always wanted to serve on jury duty, but now that I have a 13 month old and am pregnant it seems like terrible time.  My husband will be traveling for work, my family lives out of state, and most of my friends work.  How does a stay at home mom report for jury duty?  Any experiences?  Thanks!

Re: Jury Duty

  • You'll either have to get a sitter or try to get out of it on hardship grounds (by explaining the judge the circumstances you explained here).

  • Ditto pp. If you are unable to attend, in the state where I live you just fill out a hardship form explaining the situation. A committee reviews and lets you know if your request is accepted.

I live in huge farm country and a lot farm owners do this. They're the only ones that can keep the farm fully functioning/take care of the animals properly/keep the farm up to date management wise. Basically, it's not a job you can pawn off on someone else.

H just got jury duty last month and filled out the form because of our farm and it was accepted no problem. They just said he had a chance of being drawn again because his name goes back in the lottery, but he could defer as many times as necessary because of his job.

  • Like pp said - you can fill out the hardship form & you will probably get out of it if you say you have no one to watch your kids.  But your name will go back in the lottery.

  • You can usually get a deferment pretty easily and they will reschedule you at a more convenient time, perhaps when your husband is home.  I got called when I was still EBFing DS and I delayed twice.  The second time they let me pick the day I wanted to serve, which is coming up next month.  I'm not sure all places will let you do this but the lady at the jury office was really nice.

FWIW, I've served 2x on a federal jury before LO was born and it really is an interesting experience.  I came away with the feeling that the justice system is not as "fair" as I thought it was and that it's a good thing most people choose to follow the law.

  • I think you can say u have a young one to take care of. Pretty sure my aunt got out that way.
  • In my area, breastfeeding mothers are excused for 2 years. . .  I would call them and see what they can do.
