Success after IF

NSAIFR: matzo balls

I just spent the last two days making matzo ball soup from scratch. I was so excited to eat it for lunch today and my balls are like rocks. I mean you can even cut into them with a spoon. What did I do wrong? I'm so disappointed!

Anyone an expert in kosher amazingness? TIA!

Hmmm, I did that, but I opened it and drank half the bottle last night. Maybe it was too flat?? LOL I suck.

LMFAO. Not just BALLS, balls that were hard as rocks. *giggle*

  • I am loving the light fluffy balls!!!

I had some when I was in the city last week, and it was DELISH! I have been meaning to make some for a while now... did it really take you two days?

      I heart you two :)
  • You made sinkers instead of floaters!  Don't despair, many people, including my family, much prefer them that way!!

What you did was use too much matzah meal.  You want to use enough so that the spoon will stand up in the mixture, but, not that's it's too stiff.  I can't give you amounts of egg, water, and matzah meal (that's all I use to make mine), but, just try again and you'll be fine.

A tip.  You can cook the matzah balls right in the soup, so, if you really don't like yours, toss them and just make some more.  Boil your soup and drop them in and let them cook in the soup for 10-15 minutes.  I always cook them right in my chicken soup - no need to dirty another pot!

Yes an hour yesterday of hands on time and 2.5 hours of cook time to make my chicken stock and then an hour today to make my balls and the soup itself.

I could have saves myself a day if I bought chicken broth though :)

This works te best! I make crappy matzo balls and I am the Jew in the family! My irsh catholic dH makes the Best matzo balls light and airy.. Go figure!

  • Seltzer water and make sure you don't roll them too much, just enough to get them roundish. If they are packed too tight they turn into sinkers!

  • Ummm you have two toddlers, you are in the first trimester and you made a dinner that took 3 hours of prep?  Who cares if it didn't taste right.  I am in awe of you.  Do NOT tell my husband.

  • I've never heard of the selzer water idea.  My mom says the secret is to not over handle the balls.  (insert giggle here).  Do not over mix, pack, roll etc.

When ever DH and I get a craving and don't want to deal with the hassle, we buy the manechevitz (sp?) matzah ball mix and they are so easy and always come out really good.  I hate to say it, but they are just about as good as my mom's.

  • Okay, thanks ladies. I will handle my balls gently and make sure they are full of effervescent seltzer water next time LOL. This was an accidentally funny thread.
