Percentiles?

I'm totally confused by the percentiles. Do we really want our babies to be in the 90th percentile meaning they are bigger than 90% of all babies? Doesn't that seem like a bad thing? Am I looking at this the wrong way? Enlighten me please?!

Re: Percentiles?

  • Generally, you want your kid to be around the 50th percentile, tat would be average.  However, as long as they stay on the same curve consistenly, with no major dips or spikes, you are usually ok.  For instance DD has been on the 50th percentile for weight, 40th percentile for height but 80th percentile for head circumference since her first dr. appointment.  They were a little concerned with her head size at first but, since it has stayed consitently in that percentile and she has no issues, the dr. has been fine with it.

  • Ok. That's what I thought. Thanks for clearing it up for me.

  • Its just the size comparison to other babies their age. Like PP said, a 90th percentile baby is bigger than most babies their age. my son is in the 5th percentile, so its really small. But as long as they follow the same growth curve, theres nothing to worry about.
