Formal Dress thoughts/help (from current moms please)

Okay, I have a black tie formal event to attend in late October (I'll be a little over 4 months).   I was thinking of hitting the outlets this weekend and seeing if I could find a dress.   Am I dumb to buy something that early?  I hate to wait until the last couple weeks before the event and then not find something.

I was thinking a high waisted hopefully flowy something because more than anything I want to be comfy.

any thoughts, suggestions?

  • I know you would hate to wait, but I'd be more concerned about booby-size than belly size. If you must buy now, make sure it's something that can be altered easy enough and you'll probably be fine. Flowy will be comfortable and is probably a safe bet that way. Also, you may want to be sure it has straps so you can wear a supportive, comfortable bra ( depends, of course, on your bresticles).

  • I would probably wait just a little longer. Unless you can guarantee that the flowy-ness of the dress will be enough for the impending bump, I wouldn't worry too much about not finding something last minute.

Go to a maternity store.  They have faux bumps that you can wear.  If you find something at a different store you can still go to the maternity store, try on some of their things and then try the dress on with the bump.

ohhh, I did not know this.

DH told me this too.   Maybe I should listen.  I'm a cheapskate who likes to find uber pricey dresses for dirt cheap...but that requires some earlybird outlet shopping.    Maybe I just splurge this one time and hope I can resell it or alter it after the belly goes away.

  • I'd wait and hit the outlets next month.  At 4 months, and as a FTM, you may not be in maternity clothes by then (and maternity clothes will likely be way too big).   You will likely fit better in a regular dress than a maternity dress at that point.

One note if you do shop this weekend - my ribcage got wider before my belly did, so if you do go this weekend and find a great dress with a 'forgiving' cut across your belly, keep in mind how it fits along your bra line (I went from a 32 to a 36, but not from weight gain, just from an expanding ribcage).
