S/O: Cleaning straw sippy cups

What's your master method? I'm more concerned about the one we use for milk. If we're out for even an hour or two and it's not refrigerated, the milk starts to crud up and I feel like I can never get it out of all the nooks and crannies, especially the rubbery straw.

I found myself using a little plastic drink straw to try and clean out the straw parts and wondering if it's worth all this work. I think it's time to replace it, TBH. It skeeves me.

And you?

  • For cleaning the inside of the straw I use pipe cleaners, they work great

  • i bought some Dr. Brown's cleaning brush things that they sell for cleaning the small parts of the bottle, they are like tiny pipe cleaners, but honestly i usually just fill u a steaming hot pot of soapy water before bed and let them soak over night

Yep, both of these things actually. We fill a big bowl w/as much hot soapy water as possible and take all cups apart, clean the little openings and rinse them out in the morning. I've heard people complain that it's too much of a pain to do this but, meh, it doesn't bother me and I feel better about the sanitation of what she drinks out of.

  • I discovered a q-tip is great for getting inside the straw.
  • Pipe cleaners sound like a great idea.  They also have a little straw cleaner in the sippy cup section at Babies R Us that we bought.  Pipe cleaners actually sound better though.

  • We bought pipe cleaners at BRU that were made especially for cleaning straws in straw cups. That has solved all our issues.

I use something similar to this

  • Huh.   I just stick them over the spikey things in the dishwasher that hold in the dishes, so they basically surround our cups on the top rack.  I checked them the first few times and they always come sparkling clean.  We tend to leave cups of milk out too, so it's not like they weren't "cruddy" going in.

  • I just pull out the straw pieces and put them in the dishwasher basket with the silverware.  Then I just put the cup and lid in the top rack.  I don't have the patience to wash them by hand.  So far no issues.
