April 2012 Moms

I am getting laughed at by daycare

So.. long story short Liam started daycare on Tuesday. I HATED the center he was going to. I'll spare the details because it's a long story. So D is switching to nights YAY! No more daycare. Except there is an hour on Tuesday where he has to go in and I won't be home yet (my mom can watch him this day), and another hour on Friday that is the same situation. He goes in at 3:30, I won't be home till 4. The daycare that I hate will take him as a "drop in" and they are the ONLY center I've found that will do that. I've called in home daycare, local daycare centers, centers that are a bit of a drive away, and everyone has basically laughed at me when I said I just need an hour a week.

I have a frenemy-lol- that is a "nanny" who just lost her job. She could watch him Friday. But as I said, I don't really like her. I go to school an hour from where we live so if I take him with me it will be the whole time I am in my class vs. just an hour. My brother lives in the town I have school. He could watch him but he is a major pot head. And he works as a waiter so if he gets called in we would be flucked. The center I was taking him to but hate is also in the town where I go to school. So I guess I could take him there if my brother falls through.

What would you do, suck it up with the sh!tty day care center? Suck it up and have the frenemy do it? Have my brother do it and hope he isn't smoking pot during the day? I know he would never do it in the room with L but he would do it outside then watch him high and I'm not totally comfortable with that.

What say you!

  • Depends on how sh!tty the center is.

  • Like.. when I picked Liam up he was laying in the middle of the room with bright red eyes. Meanwhile, there are activity mats all over the place that weren't being used.. and he's just in the middle of the floor. I'm assuming his eyes were red from crying, but for all I know a baby that could crawl was WWF fighting him while he was just laying there on the floor. And when I dropped him off two of the three women were eating by the door. No biggie, I dropped  him off at noon so, duh, they have to eat. I came back two hours later and they were still eating by the door. Leaving one woman with 12 babies.
  • Is there a college near you? Maybe you can advertise for a part time babysitter. College students are always broke.

  • Oh! And I dropped him off and said "I think I'm going to change him before I go, he might be poopy" They said "No, no, no, Mamma you've got to get to class! Leave it to us that's what we are here for.." I cloth diaper, so I know what I dropped him off in (blue diaper) and when I came back he was still in the same blue poopy diaper. For two+ hours. I left them with yellow or green so I would know if they changed him.

I like this idea. I don't like the sound of that center. You could even get a sitter for a few hours and be able to run errands and such.

  • I think I would have issues with that DC too from what you describe.

I would probably suck it up  and go with the frenemy, if you trust her. I would go with your brother if he promised not to get high while charged with L's care.....but I'm the mom that also doesn't drink if DH isn't home because I'm scared of having to react in an emergency situation.

  • I would do the shitty center. As he gets older, the socialization is really nice.

    eew.  did you say something?

have you talked to the director - especailly about the 12:1 ratio and the older kid tackling your babe?

Honestly, I picked him up, noticed his eyes, and he spider monkeyed me hard and I almost lost it crying right there. So I just hurried out of there. If I do have him go back I would have to have a long talk with them about all of the above issues. And technically the other two women were in the room so they can still claim their 4:1 ratio.

  • You are in a tough spot. TOUGH SPOT. I have absolutely no words of wisdom for you. I bet that deep down you know the answer. Follow your gut. I tend to do that and it tends to work out 2 out of 3 times.

Find someone else. Try care.com if you don't trust those you know.

She is amazing with kids. But I've heard her talk about the other kid's she has nannied and she always goes on and on about how she does more for them than their parents do and how she taught them this and that. If she pulled that sh!t with my kid I would murder her. Then I'd be in jail and this whole situation would be much worse than it is.

  • That center sucks. I am only familiar with my center, but none of those things have ever happened. I would be pissed! And I err on the side of laid back ( ex they let him sleep on his belly sometimes, nbd to me).

  • Do you know any middle or high school students in your neighborhood you would trust? 3:30 is kind of the perfect time for a little after school extra cash. I used to watch two kids after school for about an hour and a half every day.

This is a good idea, I hadn't thought of that. Thanks!

And thanks to everyone in this thread for the support/advice! I really appreciate ie

  • Is your frenemy a GOOD nanny? I'm leaning towards her.

  • I would rather the b!tch that was great with my kids watch him than a center that leaves my kid poopy and crying ON THE FLOOR. Hells to the no would I ever take my kid back there. And the three gals eating by the door? They can stagger their breaks. Unacceptable!
