3rd Trimester

Positive GBS =(

So I was told at my last appt that my test results came back positive. I was shocked, since I've gotten good news about my previous tests =/ So penicillin will be in order for delivery day Indifferent My mind was so blank when she told me that, I didn't even get a chance to ask questions. Guess I should write some down for my appt tomorrow.

Re: Positive GBS =(

  • no worries at all, its no big deal.  I had it with DS and I'm sure i'll have it again this time.  If you are going to have "something" during pregnancy that is what you want.

  • really no big deal. You just get anitbiotics during labour. :)

  • Honestly it's not a big deal. I forgot about being GBS positive until reading this. If I remember correctly, the penicilian was in an IV. I don't recall anything being an issue. I really wouldn't stress about it.

  • i posted the same concern not too long ago since mine was positive too.   after talking to the dr, it isnt a big deal.  just an iv with antibiotics during labor.   some are positive this pregnancy and not with your next.
  • This is very common and as pp said, it is not a big deal. However, if your water breaks, you might need to head to hospital sooner than later because they need to get antibiotics in your system sooner than later.

My MW also said that it comes and goes

  • The antibiotics are optional at my birth center and may be for you too. Also, you may want to talk to your doc/mw about taking probiotics to help counter the antibiotics (for your guts/flora) if you do decide to go that route.

  • Not all hospitals require antibiotics during labor if you are positive.  Ours does not require it; you can opt to stay a full 48 hours for monitoring instead (and w/ my last birth they didn't make me stay extra time - just gave me warning signs to look for).  I haven't found out the results of my test, but my midwife agrees w/ my decision that if it is positive, I'll be declining antibiotics.

My Doc told me I had to take it. I'll check & make sure. I think I'd rather take the meds than stay for 2 days though. Embarrassed Since it's my 1st, I'm sure they'd either make me stay or take the meds. Thank you though!
  • I think other pp's have responded that it's NBD, I have it too and my SIL who just had her baby in July also had it. They just give you antibiotics. It's nothing to worry about at all.

  • Had it with my first. Just an IV. No big deal. Ended up with a c/s anyway, but it is what it is.

I may be wrong about this but isn't the reason you need antibiotics for the health of your baby, and not so much because there is risk to the mom?  I believe your baby has an increased chance of getting sepsis if you're not given antibiotics.

  • It's not a big deal, and many women who test negative one time will be positive another time, then negative another time...it doesn't say anything about the woman and is just important to know so the nursing staff can safeguard your baby.  In very rare situations the baby can get sick from the infection, so knowing early and treating with antibiotics is good!  They'll watch baby closely to be sure the meds protect them, since the worst case can be meningitis, but otherwise, it is very, very common practice and won't phase anyone working with you during labor/delivery.  (I speak from experience on the GBS though no ill effects were seen with DD1 except her smelling like the meds after delivery) and also on avoiding meningitis at all cost after DD1 contracted it from an ear infection at 18 mos even though she was being treated w/ antibiotics)

Thank you for the info! =)
  • Read what the CDC says about GBS https://www.cdc.gov/groupbstrep/resources/flyer-protect-baby.html.  You didn't catch anything, it's a naturally occuring bacteria that most of us have, you just have an increased amount, you are a carrier of it.  It's a good thing they caught it and have a treatment plan in place.

  • I had it with my 2nd but not my 1st. It wasn't a big deal for my 2nd, just a couple bags of antibiotics.

    ditto!

I'm GBS positive, and decided to use the antibiotics during labor, and my midwife suggested i talk to a natural path about probiotics to help replace the good bacteria. They suggested acidophilus  and also ordered in a probiotic for babies that i can put on my nipples when baby nurses to help his/her little immune system in the couple weeks following birth. This made me feel better about having to use antibiotics
