Re: Buspar/Buspirone

  • Nope sorry!  What is it?  If it's an anti-nausea and could suggest a few different types :0

  • I used to take it for anxiety.  It seemed to work fairly well--unlike the usually prescribed ones, that one I think you take daily and it is supposed to keep the anxiety at bay rather than taking it when you need to (I could be wrong--it has been years since I took it)

The one bad thing I remember is that you can't have any grapefruit products while you take it--something about the grapefruit interacts with your body's absorption of the medicine.  I'm a huge grapefruit fan so that was a bummer but otherwise it seemed to work pretty well.

    GL!

ETA:  I have no idea how it is classified for pregnancy as I was not pregnant when I took it...

  • It's an anti- anxiety med. :)

My midwife called in a low dose Rx of it today. She did mention that it is a pregnancy category B drug, and it is not a benzodiazepine... so that made me feel pretty good about it. She didn't mention the grape fruit thing, but I read that warning when I came home & looked up it... that's pretty crazy stuff, and I do love me some grapefruit juice. :/ But, I can deal without the juice if this is a safe alternative to help simmer this anxiety business down! Thank you for your reply, I apperciate it! :)

  • I used to work in a mental health clinic where it was prescribed fairly regularly. Maybe the docs there were just overly cautious, but they would not precribe it for someone who was pregnant. If you have concenrs and have mild anxiety, you may want to talk to your doc about using benedryl as an anti-anxiety. It is often given to pregnant women with mild anxiety. If you have more severe anxiety of course, it may not be effective, but you can also find tons and tond of relaxation exercises/videos if you google them! Good luck!
  • Yes, I take buspar. My primary doc prescribed it and my ob confirmed that it was okay to take because it's a class b. I also talked to the genetic counselor about it during my nt/genetic screen and she said it listed as safe to take. HTH!
