Powder formula advice

If you use powdered formula, what type of water did your pedi suggest mixing it with?

We had been using ready to feed, since that's what they had given us in the hospital, but are just starting to switch to similac organic powder.  I was under the impression that you have to buy distilled water for bottles, but our pediatrician said we could just use tap.  Searching on the similac website it says to boil tap water before use.  The dr never said anything about boiling...

Just curious what everyone else does...

Im still leaning towards using distilled as our area has the highest acceptable amount of ARSENIC in water, which worries me.

  • I just use the filtered water from the fridge. Never had a problem.

  • We use the nursery water.  Tap water is nasty.  I don't drink it ever so I'd never consider giving it to my babies.

  • DS2 is EBF, but DS1 was breast and formula fed. We used the powdered Enfamil Gentlease, and I usually mixed it with filtered tap water. If we were out and regular tap was all I could get though, that's what I used. We have great water in central NY though, most of our water source comes from the Great Lakes, so I don't worry too much. I would just use filtered tap, and bring a bottle when you go out with the water already in it to mix the bottle.

  • We use tap water.  Sometimes we boil it but half the time we don't.  No problems here.

  • I use a Brita filter and that's it.  Not sure if it filters out arsenic, but I'm sure they have the info on their website.

  • We use tap water as long as it's city water. If it's well water or from their pond we use bottled. Same bottled water that we drink though, nothing special.
  • We use bottled water, I just buy it in the jugs at Target.  Not nursery water, not distilled water, just plain old water in a gallon jug.  My kids are fine. :)

  • I use both, but mostly bottled water.

FYI I was using Similac Organic and cane sugar is like the second or third ingredient. I ended up switching to Earths Best and Whole Foods organic. There are a few good articles about S-Organic. The people who choose to go organic would not want that much sugar. Regular Similac doesn't have nearly as much sugar.

  • Thanks for your advice everyone!

rzte, I agree with you about the sugar.  I seriously cringe when I have to buy another container.  We've tried to make the switch twice now to earths best... I blame the hospital, when I was needing to supplement while breast feeding, they suggested similac being the closest tasting to mothers milk, because of the sweetness....  We've tried a clean switch, and then easing it in... No luck.  I'm going to try again after this weekend, mixing them together more slowly.  All in all, I am very unimpressed with the hospital for suggesting the similac, and our pedis knowledge, or lack of, about added sugar vs natural sugars.

  • Oops... That posted too soon.  Just the fact that sucrose is banned in europe should be a huge red flag and in my opinion, something a pediatrician should already be aware of..

  • I use the Gerber water because it's flouride free. There is no reason that babies should have flouride at this point.
