Bottle nipples

I've seen a few posts in the last few days about used bottles, but most people say to buy new nipples.  Sorry if this is ridiculously obvious, but why?

We got some from my SIL that my niece has used for the past year.  They are in great condition and we washed the bottle, cap and nipple in the dishwasher and they look and smell fine. My niece was formula fed, but I plan to breastfeed and pump once I go back to work.

    I had my kids 22 mos apart.  I bought new nipples.  They are not expensive and even tho I sterilize everything anyways, I just felt that it was an expense I could justify.  They do get a little mushy after being used a while.  Plus I feel its a personal thing--like a binky--its something the baby uses all the time and I felt (for me) that my kids deserved their own/new ones

    Silicone starts to break down over time, and nipples should be replaced after 6ish months of use anyway.  If you're planning to BF & pump, all you'll need are newborn nipples anyway, since you'll want eating from a bottle to be just as difficult as eating from the boob.

    Yep! All nipple and pacifiers should be checked periodically for breaks and tears and thrown away when found like that. We used stage 1 medela nipples until my girls were around 6 months old I think.
