Anyone else terrified of failing GD tests?

So, I realize that I'm a FTM and this is one of those freak out pregnancy hormone things (probably) but I'm freaking out about failing these tests and having GD. I know that it may be managed by food changes and/or medication, but I'm really worried about what that means for the birthing experience I want!

I OF COURSE will do WHATEVER I have to for the safety of my son, be that a medicated birth, a C/S, or whatever. HOWEVER, my desire is to have a natural labor with no medications. I'm having a day today where I can't get it out of my mind that I'm going to not have the experience that I long for, and that things are going to go badly for me, and yadda yadda yadda. BASICALLY, that everything that can go wrong, will. I know that most people don't have these things happen, but yeah.... CALM DOWN, SELF! *goes and eats tub of no sugar added ice cream*

Re: Anyone else terrified of failing GD tests?

  • I have my GD test this Friday and I can honestly say I am nervous. LO has been measuring 2 weeks ahead and doc said that bigger babies can mean GD but that she didn't want me to worry...I am trying.Huh? I have a feeling however that I don't have GD and everything will be fine. (i'm still not having anything high in sugar the night before or day of to be safe though)

Good luck! Mine is next Wednesday.... I'm trying to not worry myself. I'm overweight, and I've gained 20 lbs thus far in this pregnancy. A lot of my friends have told me that when they were first time moms, they gained 60+ lbs and didn't have it, but for some reason that isn't helping calm my fears! My family jokes about how bad of luck I have in the first place... /sigh.

  • Yes!! I take mine tomorrow! I have luckly passed everything with flying colors when it comes to the baby and such. But my pregnancy has been hell and with my luck on the whole pregnancy experience I will fail the test. But I will do whatever it takes for my LO to be healthy and happy. You might not get the perfect experience giving birth, but I really dont think anyone does. Just hope that you will enjoy the experience as much as possible!!! GL

  • While I can def relate to the fear associated with getting diagnosed with GD alot of that is because there are so many misconceptions about GD out there. Hopefully I can put your mind at ease about atleast a few of the things you mentioned being worried about.

I can't think of a reason you would need to have a medicated birth just because you have GD. You might need to be induced but that is your doctors call. Still even with an induction no one is going to force you to take medication for pain. I spent 90% of my induction with DS med-free (not by choice LOL). And c-sections because of GD alone are rare. Most people are able to manage GD with diet alone. Also being overweight or gaining x-amount of weight in pregnancy does not mean you will get GD or have a greater chance of getting it. It has absolutely nothing to do with weight or eating habits. Its how your body processes glucose through the placenta.  Hope this helps!! :)

Totally! I just know that pitocin is known for bringing on contractions (duh! lol) and that they can be faster and more harsh than if your body were to do it by itself. Plus, being on a pit drip would most likely nix my water laboring desire (I wanted a waterbirth, but my DR doesn't do them so she said I could labor in the water.)  Some women are able to still be up and around while on the pit drip, but I know that I can't "count" on anything.

As far as the weight stuff goes, my DR told me that a large amount of weight gain can be an indication, while I know it's not a sentence! ;) Being overweight myself, and gaining 4 or 5 lbs every month has my doctor saying I need to stop gaining for a few weeks. So stressful, cause I only eat when I feel like I need to anyway!!

Thanks for reiterating the information, though! I know I need to chill out and look at FACTS rather than fears. ;)

  • I am STM and I am also terrified so you are definitely not alone. I just try to remind myself that even if I have it, it is better to know and take the proper steps to ensure the baby's well being.

Regarding your birth experience, there really isn't a way to know how will GD impact it. I have a friend that had a really bad case of GD, having to get insulin and being induced at 37 weeks and she still managed to have no epidural at her birth. So, while you might have to tweak your plans a little, you will still be the one in control. And that is a lot of ifs, so just try to calm down and I am sure everything will be fine.

Oh do I hear you - between the Trisomy-18 scare/possibilities, moving from Canada and just realizing how fragile life is in general - I'm sure don't want anything else either.

Here's a huge "Break-a-leg" to everyone (I'm in theatre) - I hope that every gets brilliantly awesome news and that we're all good.  :)

Not trying to scare you, BUT, my mom who only gained 6lbs her entire pregnancy with me had GD. I was a chunky baby, but not huge. I was 8lbs something, and was born on my actual due date. (My mom was overweight to begin with. She hit 200lbs when pregnant with me.)

On the plus side, she did have the TV-glamourous birth. No meds, and the Dr. checked her, said she could start pushing/laboring down. The doctor left the room to check on another patient, since laboring down can take a while. My mom pushed once, the nurse freaked out yelled at my mom to stop, because in that one push, I was already out to my shoulders. My dad had to run into the hallway for the Dr. and she basically ran into the room just in time. My mom pushed for the second time, and out I was. No tearing, no meds, no nothing. Just two pushes, and wham. No, she did not labor at home for awhile before going in either. They had 0 clue I was going to be born that day. She had NO labor symptoms or signs, so they planned on going camping! They had everything packed, the pop up trailer hitched to the van, and just as they were about to leave my mom had him drive her to the hospital instead. I was born before noon. lol.

I was a very easy baby apparently. :) So, even if you do have GD, there is hope!

I'm mostly worried because I have a strong family history of diabetes, which is my only risk factor. Though, I know people get it with zero risk factors... I was a GD baby and I weighed almost 10 lbs at birth. Having a ten pound baby is mildly terrifying to me!

I'll let you know how it goes on Saturday! I'm getting mixed reviews on how that drink thing tastes.

  • GD is not the end of the world- I had it my last pregnancy. I was able to control it with diet and honestly it was a blessing in disguise, it slowed down my weight gain and I ended up eating healthier and lost the baby weight quickly.

I ended up being induced, but the decision was left up to me as my doctor was fine letting me go even longer past my due date if I wanted. If you keep your sugar levels in check and the baby looks healthy then you definitely could get the kind of birth you are looking for.

Good luck! I take my GD test the same day as you- and I'm expecting to fail. I guess if you have it with one pregnancy you are likely to have it again.

  • Just a word of encouragement, I had GD last time (had to manage with medication), have it this time (so far, managing with homeopathy & diet) - I had exactly the birth experience I wanted last time & expect to this time.

  • RissKay, not only do we have the same due date (yay), but we also have the same fear of GD. (See my post from earlier this week about it.)

Unfortunately, I failed my one-hour test, and have my three-hour one tomorrow. It's bee a stressful pregnancy, with lots of worries and scares, but I just have to roll with it.

If it helps, my doula gave me some great advice: don't stress too much because baby can feel everything you're feeling, and the stress is not good for her (him in your case).

So, I tell you, as I tell myself: cheer up, buttercup! DH says it'll be ok!

  • YES! My sister had it and I just have a feeling I do as well.  At week 20 she was measuring right along with  her due date, I had a second us at week 24 and suddenly she is measuring 1 week ahead.

I took mine yesterday...my doctor said that if I don't hear back from them by the end of the week then I am good (they only call for failed results). Maybe this is weird but I am not really nervous about it. It is what it is. I have had several friends that have had it and were fine. They just managed their food after being diagnosed and everything worked out great. I wouldn't worry too much about something that is beyond your control.

I'm not particularly nervous either though I very much hope that I do not have GD. Just had my screening today so I will hopefully find out the results early next week.

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • I had it last time and I have it this time.  While I did have a c-section, it was totally unrelated to GD.  I had low AFI and they decided to go ahead and deliver me at 37 weeks.  I had a beautiful 6 lb 1 oz baby girl who needed to wear preemie diapers for the first several weeks.

I will have to have another c-section, but that's a whole other story for a whole other post.

  • Ugh, I'm dreading it, too. Mine's Tuesday. I've gained a lot of weight quickly and even though I know most of that is thanks to the twins I still think it was quicker/more than "normal". Plus, with multiples there is a higher chance of GD.
But, just like everything else in this pregnancy, whatever will be will be - there hasn't been a whole lot I felt I could plan.
And high-five to the fellow theatre geeks. ;)

  • I just got home from failing my 1 hour, so I get to do the 3 hour this weekend.  Mine was at 3:45 in the afternoon, so they told me not to fast but to try to eat low carb/low sugar.  I was at 190 and the cut off was 140, so we get to try again.  The drink was fairly gross.  It tasted like flat, super syrup-y sprite.  It stayed down, but I could still taste it for a really long time.

Good luck to everyone on their tests!  May your blood sugar be lower than mine!

  • I had GD with my last pregnancy.  It wasn't all that bad.  I actually lost weight before I had my son.  I lost 10lbs. during my whole pregnancy.  I controled mine with diet and all was well with the delivery.  He was a very healthy 7lbs. and 2 oz. at 39 weeks and 5 days.  I have a feeling that I will probably have it again this time but it's just another thing on my plate to deal with.  As long as the baby is born healthy, I can deal with some minor diet changes or even medications.  Hope everyone has good results!
