BLW - should we stick with it?

Even though we started DD on purees a few weeks ago, I'd like to move to BLW. I really like the idea. I have the book, which I skimmed to get the gist of things. We have tried broccoli twice now, and it hasn't been too successful. The first time she actually tried to eat it, but kept coughing/gagging until DH and I called it off. The second time she really just didn't even seem interested - she just kind of mushed it around and played with it. That's fine, but she really seems to like food that we puree. She's had avocado, sweet potato, peas, pears, and prunes, and all have been a hit. I try to feed her the purees in the spirit of BLW - we wait for her to reach out for the spoon and open her mouth, and use absolutely no encouragement to get her to eat more. In fact, she screams in between bites until we give her more.

Anyway, I guess with the chunks of broccoli I'm feeling a bit defeated - even though I know I'm not "supposed" to, I'm worried she going to get a large piece of something and choke. Did I ruin her by starting with purees? Is there a better food than broccoli to start with?

Re: BLW - should we stick with it?

  • I don't totally do BLW, but I offer a fruit or veggie that he can eat himself 2x/ day along with baby oatmeal that I feed him (well, we have 2 spoons-- 1 for him and 1 for me!). The other day at dinner he ate amazingly well: all the oatmeal, 1/4 of an avocado (big chunk), and 3 oven-baked yam 'fries' that I made. Then this morning at breakfast he flung spoonfuls of oatmeal on the floor and mashed up his peach slices and banana spears before throwing them at the wall too... So it's hit or miss each day. He's only been eating solids for a few weeks. But I try to remember that he is getting all the nutrition he needs from breastmilk right now, and food is just for fun until he's around a year old. He is learning about textures and flavours, chewing and swallowing.

These are the foods he has eaten and enjoys:

    -banana in spears

    -watermelon in french fry shapes

    -broccoli trees (steamed)

    -yam fries

    -peach slices

    -peeled cucumber spears

-raw bell pepper slices (really these just get sucked on and chewed up a bit, I don't think he manages to eat any but he absolutely loves how they taste!)

    -steamed baby carrots (halved)

    -avocado (large chunks or slices)

I put a couple pieces of food (one or two kinds) on his tray and I let him pick what he wants to put in his mouth. Keep trying different foods, and offer broccoli again in a few days. We started with yams and DS hated them (shaking his head with his eyes closed, spitting it out when he got some in his mouth) but the last two times he has loved them. It takes 20-50 times of tasting a food before your tastebuds decide if you like it or not.

I don't think there is a way to "ruin" your baby's food preferences unless you feed candy and soda! Just keep trying with variety, and offer puree as well if you like. Learning to eat finger foods is a challenge for a baby, and it takes time! Good luck, and have fun with it. :)

  • Well given reply.  I think she covered it well so I'll go make dinner instead :-)

Tonight my DS, who is still very new to BLW (we did it with our DD also) will have some of the meat loaf and some of the asparagus spears.  He'll also get a piece of toast with butter and a bit of jam.

  • It sounds like you got a lot of suggestions of things to try from PPs, so I would probably try those.  But if your baby likes purees, I would give purees too.  We do both purees and finger foods rather than following BLW, because that's what she likes, so I don't see a reason not to.

  • I say just do what you're comfortable with. It doesn't have to be all or nothing. If the broccoli freaked you out, maybe try again in a week or so when your LO has had a bit more practice with other foods. We do a lot of purees but I also give him some manageable-sized pieces of regular food. Just go with the flow! Soon she'll be eating everything!

  • Thanks ladies! These are great suggestions. We just had our 6mo checkup and DD has dropped a bit on the length and weight scales, so the pedi said to try the solids at least 2x/day. Not sure that's really going to help, but at least we'll get some practice! I like the idea of doing a mixed approach.
