another RnP transition to crib post. heeeelp!

I know I'm probably the last one on here to make the transition, but we are FINALLY transitioning LO to her crib from the RnP, and it is horrible. Not only was LO sleeping in her RnP, but she was being swaddled too, so we have shot ourselves in both feet with the whole sleep thing. We're trying to break her of both habits, and have been for a while, but around 1 am (I have to be at work @ 6:30am), after being up every 20 min with her since 9pm, she usually wins the battle and goes back into the RnP, which even then has her waking up every 2 hours or so. I've been trying to do naps in the crib, which is hit or miss...I'll get 45 min on a VERY good day, but most times she wakes up as soon as she hits the mattress.

So what do I do?? I've tried all the tricks- heating pad/crib wedge/sleep machine...nothing seems to make a difference. I've been keeping her unswaddled in the RnP to try and get her at least used to that, but it only makes a very little difference. So what do I do? Do I keep up the battle and trade a few nights of hell and no sleep (for any of us) in hopes that she'll take to it cold turkey? (CIO isn't an option for us either- her crib is in our room) Or do I try some other sort of transition?

  • You aren't the last! My daughter is doing well in the crib but my son hates it. What about a sleep bag to help her feel more secure? Also, try to move her when she is completely out (this is the only time my son is ok with it). I feed him in the room on the floor sitting in the Boppy, he passes out then I burp him, and move him. Does she sleep in a smaller flat space- like a Moses basket or Summertime sleeper? If she does you could always put the smaller sleeper in the crib. There is also a positioner thingie my friend has that made her LO's transition easier! Good Luck I feel your pain!

I'm glad I'm not alone!! :) yeah we've been trying the sleep sack thing that leaves her arms free, and i think it's helping...and we used a bassinet for a little bit, but i think she has a thing against flat surfaces...I'm intrigued by this positioner thingie! is it like a wedge?

  • We are still in the RNp too :-(. We tried a couple times and failed. He sleeps in a crib at dc, which I thought would help the transition, but no.

And ds is about 22 lbs, so the switch has to come soon, I dread it.

  • I feel your pain!  There is light at the end of the tunnel!

For us, naps were a disaster in the crib, so we started with night first, making sure he was totally out before we put him down.  If he woke up in the middle of the night, we fed and put him back in the crib, he'd cry, then after one attempt, we'd bring him to the RNP.  It sounds like you're basically already doing that though.

The thing that did it for us was a soother. Do you have this or somethin like it:

Ours was a hand me down and it doesn't look like they sell it anymore, but the link above looks very similar and has the same purpose. Seriously, he was enthralled by it and he would put himself to sleep if it was on.  In the middle of the night now, if he wakes up, we turn it on and leave the room to see if he's really hungry or if he'll just go back to sleep.  Now, he knows how to turn it on and off himself!

I know the music wouldn't be super awesome since you're sharing a room but it's better than a crying baby and only lasts 15 minutes!

    Good luck!

Yes! We have one of those- the ocean sound seems to soothe her, but I think the lights actually have the opposite effect. She laughs and kicks her legs while looking at it lol....I think that's a good idea of yours, it sounds less stressful...I got to the point last night where I was just like 'you win!' and surrendered the crib battle. On the up side, she's been asleep in her crib for the past half hour (knock on wood)! It took an hour and a half to get her down for good, but still... I'm praying to everything holy that this sticks!
