Owen was going through a hitting phase a while ago, but he stopped hitting us (fortunately that was short lived.) He's started hitting the animals or throwing things at them. He just chucked Ceasar with his sippy cup kind of hard, and my DH was RIGHT THERE. Ceasar's a pretty good dog, but even the best dog could lose his shit about that (fortunately he just runs away.) We do an immediate time-out and try to make him say sorry. Any other suggestions? It's not fair to the furry friends, and I don't want O getting hurt either.
He's 2.5, but has a speech delay, so I'm never sure exactly how much sinks in with him. I think his comprehension is fine and it's just speech production that's delayed, but it can be hard to tell.
Re: Tips for not hitting the animals?
I may get totally flamed for this, but my dd learned her lesson about hitting the cat when she the cat finally got fed up and scratched her. We taught her "nice nice," but sometimes she forgets. I think the most effective thing is to get all excited and enthusiastic when she IS nice, and to take her hand and show her how to pet nice.
That said, I wouldn't ever let her mess w/ a dog and get bit. My cat is fairly harmless b/c she has hardly any teeth, and she just swats a little with her claws. Usuallly, if dd isn't being nice, I move her away from the cat.
