Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Tylenol for teething?

At DS' 9 month appointment Wednesday, she said he had 4 top teeth coming in with one about to break through.  It still hasn't come in and my poor boy seems to be really bothered with them.  He's cranky, having trouble sleeping and messing with his ears a lot.  He's not running a fever.  I've been giving him Highland Teething Tablets, but they don't seem to be helping.  My friend (who doesn't have kids) suggested I give him Tyenol.  He's never had any and I'm not sure if teething warrants it.  Thoughts?

Re: Tylenol for teething?

  • DD2's top 2 teeth are almost in and I have been giving her Tylenol all week.  She is miserable without it.

  • I give ibuprofen for teething instead of tylenol. I think it works better for teething. Ibuprofen is also an anti-inflammatory unlike tylenol.

The teethers you put in the freezer and just a cold wash cloth are very helpful too.

There are also those mesh food holders that you put food in. I put ice cubes and frozen fruit in them when she is teething and she loves it.

I don't mind giving tylenol or Motrin for teething. I usually give one dose per day about 20 minutes before bedtime.

    This.

  • teething sure does warrant it. it makes the mouth hurt so bad! i know when i am in pain i cant sleep and tylenol helps. i dont hesitate. especially before bed.
  • My DS has two bottom teeth coming through and Tylenol wasn't helping. Called the pedi and he said ibuprofen was better since it helps with inflammation.  We have been giving him infant Advil and he is so much happier.

  • we use hylands most of  the time but when their actually cutting thru and LOs are miserable and can't sleep well I give them little fevers brand for bedtime but no more than 5 days in a row. Im not crazy about giving them meds but I also don't want them to be in pain

  • We use ibuprofen for the worst nights.  It makes a whole world of difference.

  • As others have said, ibuprofen is better because of the anti inflammatory properties. We give it whenever he is super fussy at bedtime when he is teething. He will usually fall asleep within half an hour of getting it, and stay content for about 8 hours.

  • Yes, we've given Tylenol on and off throughout DD's teething. It helps her sleep through the pain.

  • We have been using Tylenol for her teething. Also using Humphries dissolving strips at night. Work amazing!
