Breastfeeding

ways to hold baby

I went and saw a lactation consultant yesterday and the position she had me hold Rylan in was, while better than what I had been doing, still kinda awkward for the both of us. I'm having a little bit more trouble getting him to relax in order to latch because the LC had me position him so that one arm was kinda hugging me around my side under my breast. Is this the normal thing to do for this type of hold? He doesn't really like having his arm there and flails it around and it gets in the way and then he roots lower than where my nipple is. Never mind his potential sucking problem.

I'm thinking that I need to talk to the LC again for help in getting into some other type of hold that's more comfortable for him.

Re: ways to hold baby

  • Have you tried the football hold? It's easier if you use a pillow to support him. It allows for him to be flat and for you to have control of your breast and his head.

  • Are you using a Boppy, My Brest Friend, or some other nursing pillow?  I use My Brest Friend and found when I first started breastfeeding that it made the holds easier.

  • I have a Boppy. It almost feels too fat around me though and it might hold him too high cuz I have a shorter torso. Anyone else have that problem?

I've tried the football hold, but I might be doing it wrong. Are there any good websites that show how to do these holds? Good YouTube links?
