Delivery Hair Style? (corn rows, braids, or come-what-may?)

My hairdresser wants me to switch to braids two weeks before my EDD. She says it's best to have my hair out of my face and corn rowed/braided down so I don't have to bother with it during the first month. I like corn rows and had them when I took my babymoon to Aruba. Kept things pretty and easy. I don't like individual braids, so I prefer tidy corn rows.

For you (STM) ladies with relaxed hair, did you bother to corn row or braid? Or did you just go get your hair done in the weeks  after birth? Right now I'm not sure how practical it is to think that I'll feel like/be able to go get a wash and blow dry two weeks post partum.

This will sound crazy but... for newborn pictures, I kinda want my regular, blow dried hair - not corn rows. But I'm not Beyonce so I can't have a hairdresser on call at the hospital ready to blow dry and style me! I've also heard to bring a satin pillowcase with me, to help avoid hair breakage during active labor.

 Thoughts?

  • I do not have the same hair type as you (mine is semi-thick and wavy/curly), but if I had the chance to get a super low maintenance hairstyle for birth and post partum I would be jumping all over that. As it is, I plan on headbands and pony tails to keep the hair out of my face. In my last labor, my hair getting in my face was one of my biggest annoyances.

  • I agree with PP, if you have the chance for something low maintenance, go for it. I'm super lucky in that my hair is really easy, even though it's long, so I never really have to worry about it, but it's definitely one of the last things I'd want to have to think about.

  • I also had a different hair type from you. And I completely understand wanting your hair to look a certain way in the newborn photos. However I would go with the braids. I had an unplanned csection and wasn't able to shower for a few days after delivery. That meant my hair was not picture perfect. But even if I was able to shower I can't imagine having the energy to blow dry my hair In The hospital and my hair is quite easy to handle. So I'd go with the braids for hospital pics and then take some more pics at 2 weeks or a month pp and have your hair however you want in those photos.
  • I woke up thinking about the exact same thing!

I'm not relaxed anymore, and I think that I'm going to do a straw set. If I'm careful and use my satin pillow case and hair bonnet (which will be in my hospital bag along with hair pins and my shea butter moisturizer), I can keep the style for a few days. Other than that, I'll do twist-outs myself as those are pretty easy.

  • I'm not a woman of color so I can't speak to this specific question and the care, etc. involved.

However if you want to see GREAT delivery hair, check out Cara Muhlhan's (the midwife in the Business of Being Born) hair in the movie The Bus. of Being Born.

It's some serious early 90s, tower of braids realness. I love it.

WHY CAN I NOT FIND A PHOTO

  • I would definitely go for something easy, especially if it will last for a while! FWIW my delivery hairstyle involved a pony tail, bobby pins... and a wet washcloth on my head. I was looking good.

  • This gives me something to think about. If i don't get braids, then I'll wind up (after sweating, huffing and puffing) with a wet ponytail. And if I won't have energy to blow dry and style, maybe I should just go the low maintenance route for the first month and call it a day. I have long hair too, but i'm normally a twice a month salon girl, so I don't often do my own hair. Anyhoo... i do think corn rows will be in order.  i'll look like im 10 with my hair off my face so hopefully they'll let me go home with my baby. ;)

Part of why I wear my hair in the way that I wear it is that when I pull it back i look like a teen and people think DH is my older brother - not my DH.

  • This post made me smile. I've been thinking about the same thing for the last few weeks. I'm transitioning ( about 50% natural) so trying to figure out the right style is even harder! I was also thinking about a braided style so it could easily be taken down for the newborn pictures.
