Is there a good way to forwardface?

It's getting harder and harder to wear my son in our ergo or mei tai because he spends the whole time twisting and straining to face forward. I am going to experiment with a hip carry in the ergo, but I'm also curious if there are any carriers or holds that will safely allow a forward facing carry.

Thanks

  • This isn't always the popular opinion on this board, but I think forward facing for short periods of time is totally fine and isn't going to cause irreparable harm. I wouldn' leave him forward facing for 2 hours at a time every single day but for short blocks of time here and there, it's fine. You can do it in the beco carrier. You may be even able to do it in the ergo, but I've never tried it.

  • With a pouch, ring sling, or wrap, you can sit them cross-legged and forward facing. It's harder on your back, and you have to be more careful that they are secure.

I never liked the hip carry in the Ergo, but I love it in the ring sling. You can also do a hip carry in the mei tai, but again, it never worked great for me.

You could also try a back carry instead.

  • Why not try a back carry? That way he can see what you see, but it's easier to carry (and he can bury his face in your neck if he gets overstimulated).

  • Try the Beco Gemini. Not every baby likes facing mom all the time, especially as they get older. DS hated the back carry but loved the forward facing carry.
  • Beco Gemini allows for forward facing front carry. We've found a hip carrier in a ring sling works well too for interested LO's. Or back carry - which is my personal favorite since it's much easier on the wearer and I don't have a great back.

  • FF is VERY hard on you the older/bigger they get.  I'd highly suggest turning him around and putting him in a back carry (especially a high one if your carrier can do that) so he can see over your shoulder.

Well, I suggest trying that; we all know that baby decides the final answer. ;)

  • I agree with the back carries. If you do a high back carry with tour MT your LO will be able to see just fine.

  • I have a beco gemini and my DD loved the hip carry.  I wore her this way until she was two.  At that point I was around 20 weeks pregnant and it did not work for me.  She was never a fan of the back and I liked being able to talk to her face to face.

  • I just started wearing LO FF in the moby. He loves it and his knees are above his hips, which I believe is what the concern is.

  • I agree with the advice to try a high back carry in your MT (the ergo won't be high enough) so he can see over your shoulder.  You can FF ok in some carriers if you can get that knee to knee coverage and keep the knees up.  The problem is that it's really just a short term solution as that will get uncomfortable for you fast - try holding your child like that in arms vs. holding him facing you to feel the difference.  A high back carry gives the same view but is so much more comfortable ;)
  • Thank you all so much! I had been avoiding the back carry because I cannot see how I could get him into it with another set of hands, but I will do more research - and practice. Thanks

  • I just practiced over a bed. If he'll sit still for half a minute, you can sit him in the carrier and then sit in front and buckle up

  • We've done forward facing in a ring sling (legs crossed, feet higher than butt).  I'm not sure how big LO can be for this to work, though.
